RE:  New York Times Restaurant Review : Hutongs Restaurant

“The glittering, soaring, hard-edge dining room looks like an Art Deco nightclub where everybody is on cocaine. Service ranges from “we’re delighted to see you” to “who are you again?” (Wells NYC Times magazines). The hutongs restaurant is located in Manhattan between Sutton Place and Lenox Hill. From the pictures I’ve seen online, the restaurant looks like an upscale ballroom for rich people. From what Pete Wells tells us, this restaurant is very good for making Chinese food in an uplifting point of view.

The way Pete Wells describe the food that he order to eat, he seems very pleased with the preparation of the plates. He also seems pleased with the cooks and discipline they have. From the charcoal crunchy, and chewy mini dumplings footballs, with the flaky pastry dough craved in feathers reminded of a wing bird song. I’m guessing the chef wants to change the customer’s point of view of Chinese food and how they can go from modern in extremely exciting. Although the decor, drinks, and appetizers were pleasant to remember, the Peking duck was awful. Awful but not by flavor, but by presentation. The Peking duck looks it’s been hacked by a mad man plus the skin was soggy. For $84, I wouldn’t expect that from a restaurant that looks like you can sniff cocaine in there. ( Reference of speech). The fried soft shell crab dish is my favorite. No, I’ve never been there before but for Pete Wells description of the soft shell crab buried in dry spices sounds heavenly. Slightly sweet to the bite, and what’s expected to be extremely spicy is actually aromatic sounds divine.

I was told that the dessert didn’t disappoint as well. Soybean ice cream with sesame creme; I’m confused on how can two items known to be savory can turn into something sweet and unforgettable. I would definitely go to that restaurant just to experience a perspective of Chinese food and their culture. I know me and my friends would go to Hutong but my family, I don’t think their ready for that type of setting. I would really like to taste the fried crab with the soybean ice cream to finish.
