Class work : The Highlights of My Internship

Entry#11 Class work: The Highlights of My Internship

Looking back at the journal entries, I realized my internship at Office of Image and visual communications at City Tech got me a good amount of pieces of work that adds to my portfolio and also I got to experience various equipment such as professional cameras and gimbals.

I’ve done internship at a named company’s graphic design department before. To be honest, there is nothing much you can do as an intern. I’m not saying it is a bad thing but my current mentor Professor Vargas gave me a chance to work on real projects. If you want to make a lot of portfolio pieces –Especially motion graphics–I strongly recommend working for Office of Image and visual communications at City Tech.

Day #10 Completed Animated Guide for Distance Learning

MAR 30 Mon / INTERNSHIP JOURNAL : Completed Animated Guide for Distance Learning

I have finished synchronizing royalty free music with the animation I worked on last Thursday.
The duration of the video is 55 seconds. 1:1 square ratio 600x600px.
and.. Of course I have a typo! I’m going to have to fix that next time.

I tried to make this animated guide as delightful as possible because people are already stressed and scared. As a student I also follow a lot of official school accounts for info. I’m glad that I can provide fellow students useful information for this crisis.

Day #9 Making animated guidelines for distance learning

MAR 26 Thu / INTERNSHIP JOURNAL : Making animated guidelines for distance learning

I added animation to graphics using After Effects today, and finished 1:1 ratio 600*600px version.

I’m thinking of adding a  royalty free soundtrack I found on Youtube. I’ll be finishing up adding music to the video next Monday.

I designed and organized all elements statically on Photoshop to begin with. It made things visually organized and pleasing but I realized it might be inefficient work flow in terms of adding animation.

Day #7 First Online Conference via Zoom

MAR 19 Thu / INTERNSHIP JOURNAL : First Online Conference via Zoom

Because of crisis of Covid 19, schools and companies are switching to distance work/class. Office of image and visual communications also had a meeting on Zoom to figure things out.

We discussed working remotely and decided interns will check in and out via email. We also discussed what the problems are having online classes, and what students need.

Professor Vargas told us that we will drop the new building and fitness center promotion project and most likely we’ll be making thumbnails to guide City Tech student through Social media account.

MAR 2 Mon/ INTERNSHIP JOURNAL Day #5

MAR 2 Mon/ INTERNSHIP JOURNAL Day #5

I showed him what I made the last week and got feedback and After Effects templates from Prof. Vargas. He told me to make title animation specifically using the quote “You challenged your mind. Now challenge your body.”

At the end of the day, I finished the animation for the given quote using tracking animation, and got more feedback.

  1. Split the text into 4 shotsYou challenged / your mind / Now challenge / your body.
  2. In the intro : Take “where tech ~ take you” and move the shield logo to the center
  3. Might have to make it longer
  4. Or apply this style to the main tagline like
    “challenge” “your” “mind”
  5. At 13 sec : take out “at” and add “FITNESS CENTER”

FEB 27 Thu/ First Photo-shoot Experience

FEB 27 Thu/ INTERNSHIP JOURNAL : Day #4

I got to assist Prof. Vargas with Photo-shoot for Nursing department in the new Academic building. Photography is not one of my strengths, and I’ve never been to any professional photo-shoots, so it was very interesting to see what it’s like to work with professional photographer.

Since I don’t have any knowledge, I didn’t get to help set up the Camera and lighting equipment, but I got to take a look at his camera/light setup for photo-shoot. Prof. Vargas himself took a picture of the setting, so he can remember next time.

Another thing I learned is how to handle a large group of people. We took a shot of about 20 students and faculty members and took individual shots as well. At the individual shooting, Prof. Vargas always asked everyone’s name and built a rapport with the model, and he asked models to say “Watermelon”. It made everyone smile and curious why watermelon? It turns out that the word “Watermelon” generates natural smile rather than saying “Cheese”.  That was very fun method.

FEB 24 Mon/ More Motion Graphics

FEB 24 Mon/ INTERNSHIP JOURNAL : Day #3

Last week, other two interns and I worked on storyboard and mock-up shot as a part of Pre-production together. Today, as other two interns specialize in video shoot and editing and I specialize in motion graphics design, they have moved on to production stage and I started working on motion design sketches. I was also told to go ahead and make mockup animations and effects in the interim rather than waiting for the complete footage.

So I explored with more effects and tutorials such as tritone, text outline motion, screen slice with masking, and gradient ramp in After Effects, and made short title animation.

FEB 20 Thu/ Pre-Production for CityTech Fitness Center Promo Video

FEB 20 Thu/ INTERNSHIP JOURNAL

The second day at internship, we had another intern hired for video shooting and editing, and we took a tour at the new building in order to make a storyboard for City Tech Fitness Center Promotion video.

We used gopro camera with Zhiyun gimbal – Camera stabilizer, and video shooter interns’ own mirror-less cameras to shoot test shots and mock up video. As I was discussing with video shooters I realized I need to familiarize myself with Video production terms. After we came back from Academic building, we built the storyboard on a whiteboard with post it papers.
