Finding Your Voice

Artist Statement

For Unit 2 I was interested in the question “why is music appealing to humans?” because music is something I’m very passionate about and listening to music is one of my hobbies. When I was looking over my final for Unit 2 I came to the conclusion that I wanted to share the idea of how music can positively impact people’s lives because that’s what I thought was the most important thing someone reading the bibliography should know, but also because music greatly impacts my life in positive ways and I wanted to show people how music can impact their lives too.

Why did I choose to make this project? I want to show my audience how powerful music can be in their lives and maybe even move some of my audience to appreciate music more. Speaking of my audience, my intended audience were music listeners between the ages of 16-24. When i was doing research for what age groups listen to the most music i got multiple age groups however, this is an age group that is close to my age so it would be the easiest for me to figure out a genre that would reach them. In addition, since this is my own age group it’s easier for people to relate to me viceversa. I chose this audience and genre almost simultaneously. A lot of people around this age group are on tik tok a lot, which is why i chose tik tok as my genre, a lot of young people will be able to see the tik tok.

At first i was going to make a article but that didn’t really appeal to my audience much, then i wanted to do a youtube video but I genuinely had no idea how to do it or even start, so i chose tik tok because it would reach my audience even more than youtube and would be easier to make. My first step in making my tik tok was getting pictures for it because it would kind of be a slideshow. At first I had some pictures but I didn’t have enough. I got more pictures and I brainstormed captions for the new pictures. I was having difficulty trying to incorporate my unit 2 info into my video, but i figured i can use my quotes and so i put some of them in my pictures.

I think it turned out ok. I say ok because I feel like it would’ve been better as a youtube video and i had the whole idea for the video in my head and it would’ve been better than the tik tok. However, I’m still satisfied with the tik tok because it still turned out good and with the kind of youtube video i had in mind i don’t think i would have figured out how to actually even make the video. Furthermore, my tik tok still brought out my ideas with the pictures and quotes, and my main point of how music positively impacts life was still properly presented.

I changed some pictures, quotes, and background music just to see what fits the best and what best brings out my point. I don’t think I would have done anything differently…maybe changing the background music to something that I personally like more because it could make the video more personal to me and could’ve even given me another slide to talk about. It actually would have been a good opportunity to show my audience how music positively impacted me in another way besides the three examples of some of my favorite artists. Honestly, I’m happiest about my personal examples because I get to share something that I’m passionate about to other people who may feel similar, and maybe my examples would get them to think about music that impacts them as well, and getting my audience to think about this is ultimately my main point. When I first started I thought it was going to be a lot easier since we kind of have most of our information already. But making a tik tok is harder than it seems, for example when you’re half way done and then all of your progress suddenly disappears. But for the most part it wasn’t too difficult. I thik its very unique. When I think of a college English class I usually go straight to thinking about reading ang essays insteads of tik toks about music. I think being able to take information and totally change how it’s presented is definitely something I can use in the future, for different classes or maybe for jobs. Changing the whole genre of something isn’t easy, but now that I did something like this, if i ever have to do something similar I’ll be a little bit familiar with it.  Overall, making this project was very fun and I think there are skills that i took from this process.

schedule

Nov 17- Brainstorm ideas to write about from unit 2, brainstorm genres I can write in

Nov 22- start to actually write a rough draft, while still making some slight changes

Nov 29- rough draft should be complete or close to complete

Dec 1- rough draft finished, starting to work on final by revising things from rough draft

Dec 6-turn in final

I wrote down some ideas about how I want the project to go. I wrote down genres that would fit with what im talking about and the specific audience im trying to reach. Writing things down helped me to think about the structure of the project and I think it helped me organize my ideas.
