James Baldwin was an American writer. He garnered acclaim across various mediums, including assays, novels, plays, and poems. This speech by Baldwin is a really powerful speech that has a lot of powerful words and is a speech that the more you read the more that you want to read. What I think of what Baldwin was saying, is that the problem that he is talking about are problems that were really affecting this country and the future of black kids. Also, Baldwin was a black writer which means that the problem with discrimination against black people and most important black kids affects him as a person and more as a father. The first thing that stood out to me was the different tones that Baldwin use. He sounds upset and disappointed with how these children are growing up. In the speech, he also use words like bad faith and dangerous to describe his feeling and the environment. Another thing that stood out to me is the audience, in the 5 years that I have been here in the United States, I have not seen a lot of articles or speeches that the main audience is teenagers and teachers. Something that I wish had been taught in my school is the history of this country and the school, for me, I was not born in this country so I don’t know a lot about the history of the country and I believe that the history of education has a lot to do with how this country is managed. Also is good to know how things were back in the day so we can’t complain about school/homework. I want to know about this topic because for me I find it really interesting to learn about the history of other countries, especially if it relates to the history of my country.
