Finding Your Voice

Due Thursday by 8 am!

READ AND ANNOTATE : “Maybe I Could Save Myself by Writing”

READ AND ANNOTATE: “The Fourth of July” by Audre Lorde

WRITE: (250 Words)  So far in this unit, we have read (and heard) three examples from the genre of the “education narrative.”  Your first essay assignment in this class will be to write in this genre yourself.  So in this discussion forum, I’d like us to have a conversation about what the features of this genre are. Please discuss some of the following:

  • What, from what you’ve seen so far, are the “ingredients” (also known as “conventions”) of the education narrative genre?
  • What do you think might be a place to get started with your own education narrative?
  • What are your questions or concerns about writing an education narrative of your own?
  • If you like, you can also feel free to share an educational experience you had and ask for feedback from your colleagues (and me) to see if we think that might be a solid place to begin writing.

Category: Unit One!

I will also be collecting your readings– we’re going to look at annotation more

In the few examples of the writing genre I’ve read; all had something to do with school and how school affected them whether it was good or bad. In this genre the education system is what drives the story and how the speaker changed. So if I wanted to write my own education narrative I could start a moment in my school career that I think really played a major role in shaping me as a person. I could talk about that one cold February morning where we had to evacuate the school and stand outside in circles huddled for warmth for hours because we had an intruder or when I didn’t do my homework and almost failed out of spite. My only question is how do we pick these moments and how do we know these moments affected us that much, how do I shave  down these moments so it won’t be boring for someone to read. How I take apart these moments and actually figure out why they shaped me; take my first example. There are so many reasons why that day is so ingrained in my head. I can’t really think of any of them without actually  sitting down and reflecting, like some of the friends I made in that circle for warmth are some of my best friends and people I still talk to this day but i don’t feel like that shaped me or maybe the school evacuating made me think for the first time that maybe our school isn’t that safe or maybe my neighborhood the area i grew up in wasn’t safe. I’m just not sure what to focus on in these narratives.
