Finding Your Voice

Homework for Tuesday, Sept 6 (8 AM)

READ and ANNOTATE: “How to Read Like a Writer” by Mike Bunn. Remember the annotation skills we discussed in class (we watched the video).

WRITE:  On the website, write a post of at least 300 words discussing the following questions:

  • In his article, Mike Bunn writes “You are already an author.” He’s talking to you.  What do you think he means by this? What are some of the things you write already?  (Hint: “Nothing” is not an acceptable answer.) Think of all of the ways you already use words in your everyday life. That’s authorship! How will that existing expertise help you in your college reading and writing career?
  • Was there anything you noticed in Bunn’s article that you would like to try to do in your own writing? What, in particular? Please be specific!

I think when Mike Bunn writes “you are already an author” he means that the reader has the ability to write anything whether it be stories, argumentative essays or a speech. I think Mike Bunn wrote that because he made a guess of the demographic of people who are going to read his book. He knew that the people that are going to read a book called “how to read like a writer” probably want to learn how to read like a writer because they want to get better at writing literature. There is also the demographics of students so he could be writing the book expecting many students are going to read the book so him saying “you are already an author” is him referring to students and the work students probably did for schools whether it be essays, poems or whatever in between. I mean I’m a student and I have written essays comparing contrasting dozens of books, an analysis on shows, a few short stories and many more. And I guess by definition I’m an author. With this already existing experience I can most definitely further my writing skills during college because I already know or have a great idea of what I am doing. But reading this passage gave me a few ideas on how to improve my writing further; like when he mentioned finding techniques in the things I read and adopting those techniques. For instance he uses the example you read in an essay and they use a quote from President Barack Obama and he made the reader think, asking “ what do you think of the technique?” Here Mike Bunn is trying to show you how to pick a technique and choose whether you want to use it in your own writing or not. So I think I will try that in the next essay I write if it makes sense.
