BREATH, EYES, MEMORY 20-27

One interesting part was when Sophie and Martine started talking to each other even though Sophie was stubborn when her grandmother told her to get close to her mother. Sophie didn’t move but her mother did. I felt that Sophie’s mother was feeling guilty or I don’t know but she really wanted peace with Sophie and forget about the past. In one part of the story Martine said “I want to be your friend, your very very good friend, because you saved my life many time when you woke me up from those nightmares.” It felt like if Martine own so much to Sophie that she feels bad that they haven’t speak in long time even though Sophie was writing letter to het but Martine never replied. This was the moment that was the most meaningful to me because I believe everybody have been in this situation when we get mad to our parents or vice versa and we feel guilty even if we didn’t cause the problem.

BREATH, EYES , MEMORY 13-19

One meaningful moment was went Tante Atie read what she had wrote and it was the very exact words that Sophie wrote to her in mother’s day. This shows how much Tante Atie loved what sophie wrote to her when she was a child even though Tante Atie said that it was better if Sophie give the letter to her mother. When I read these line when Tante Atie read I felt happy because it’s very hard to remember something unless it’s something really beautiful or unforgettable. What I didn’t see was Sophie’s reaction because Tante Atie left immediately but I have the feeling that she must have felt happy too after all those years her Aunt remembering what Sophie read to her before departing from Haiti. Tante Atie is learning to write and read that those words are one the first words she has learned to write and read.

BREATH, EYES, MEMORY

One part that made me feel bad was when Sophie started being tested, not because of the test that her mother did to her but because of the way her mother reacted after the test began. Sophie’s mother started putting distance between them, barely talking to Sophie, not wanting to take her when she was going out with Marc. Sophie couldn’t handle being tested anymore, feeling alone and lost so she decided to press the pestle into her part so her mother could stop the test. I don’t understand the reason of why her mother put distance between them and why she started the test. She knew that being test was not fun or comfortable at all, especially for Atie and Sophie. The other part that I don’t understand is that even when Sophie fail the test there was no going back to being a whole. The most important part that I don’t understand is Sophie’s mother didn’t even ask who was it or how it happened.

BREATH, EYES, MEMORY 5-8

One moment that I felt connected to the story was when Sophie’s mother said “You are going to work hard here. You have a chance to become the kind of person you wanted to be. If you make something of yourself in life, we will all succeed.” This is the same thing my parents have always told me, that in life I have to work hard in order to succeed in whatever I want to be. At 22 years old, I already have 3 IT certifications, one part-time job in a high school, one more semester to finish my bachelor’s degree, one little black cars taxi business and hopefully I and my brothers succeed in our new import company. I am very happy to have listened to my parents because I made them proud of me, especially because I am going to the first one in my family to graduate in the USA. I can also help them economically, especially my mother because she doesn’t work due to her sickness so I and my brothers pay for all her expenses because she was always there for us when we were little kids and we needed her.

BREATH, EYES, MEMORY 1-4

One moment very significant for me was when Tante Atie and Sophie went to visit Grandma and Grandmother asked Sophie if she was hungry that she will only cook things she likes and that it was probably be the last time she sees her Grandma. This moment is very significant for me because a year ago my brother almost die so I went to Ecuador for few weeks and I saw my Grandma she was 87 and I was so much happy to see her again but I knew she has aged that it was most likely her last year. My Grandma treated me like a little child the few weeks and when the time came I had to leave I cried a lot because I had the feeling that it was going to be the last time I see her. Few months later she passed away and I was not able to go to her funeral. This is why this moment is very significant for me because it reminds me of my beautiful and lovely Grandmother.

I, Tituba. 13-end

It is amazing seeing Tituba returning to her cabin and finding it very much as she had left it. It was worm-eaten, some thermites and more stuff but nothing that can’t be fixed. What surprised me the most was the fact that the slaves welcome her and helped her building her cabin again after their wok at the plantations. I guess Tituba never realized that she could have had everything in her cabin without following John Indian. Even though the slaves knew about Tituba trials they didn’t stop looking for her to heal them. Tituba found a how to treat cholera and to heal wounds. Tituba enjoyed her peace and freedom she was looking for and more importantly in her land. I can’t still understand why she had to follow John Indian. She would have been much better in her cabin healing slaves, enjoying her land and spending time with her beloved spirits.

I, Tituba 8-12

One moment that made me feel sad but happy at the same time was when Benjamin gave Tituba her freedom. Even though I felt happy she got her freedom, I was still sad because of the cause that led to it. Benjamin lost the house, ships and more importantly his children. I was surprised Benjamin did not blame Tituba for his lost after all she was recognized as one of the witch of Salem but instead he blamed himself claiming that it was God punishing him for not giving Tituba her freedom. Tituba did not want her freedom at that very high price meaning abandoning Benjamin after losing everything. Everything about Benjamin surprised me immensely because he got Tituba out of the prison to make her a slave but it was more like looking a mother for his children. A mother can never be replaced but it was good to see that Tituba and the children got along. I think it was like a dream for Tituba because she found peace in the house and also a replacement for John.

I, Tituba 2-7

One moment that caught my attention was in the prison when Hester said that there was room for two in the cell. Tituba called her Mistress and she answered don’t call me Mistress call me by my name Hester and asked Tituba her name. When Tituba answered, Hester said who gave it that name and Tituba said her father. Then they started they started talking about their life, society and especially about the meaning of witches. In Hester’s society, “witches do strange and evil things. They cannot perform true miracle”. Hester also said that Tituba was too lovely to do evil that she would defend her innocent. It surprised me because she just met Tituba and she said that she would defend her innocent. This is how good person Tituba must have been that even when she’s looking for revenge she can still shine her good heart. They became friends but didn’t last much because Hester hanged herself and back to the beginning another person died with the rope in Tituba’s life.

I, Tituba ch 5-9

The part that I felt really sad for Tituba was when she was walking back from Long Wharf with the kids, she witnesses a terrible sight that were never to be forgotten. It was that a lot of people was watching an execution of an old woman in the same way Abena, Tituba’s mother, was executed. For Tituba it was like reliving her mother’s execution when she was a child. It was not fair because she already endured her mother’s death but when she sees it happen again all her memories from her mother’s execution became alive. Tituba couldn’t do amything but scream really loud because of her powerless rage. I feel sorry for Tituba having to relive her mother’s dead but what I worry about the most is that the old woman got executed because she was a witch and Tituba is also considered a witch so there is a chance that she can be executed too and die in the same way as her mother.

I, Tituba ch1-4

It is very horrific how the story started that Abena, Tituba’s mother, was raped by an English sailor and because of this horrendous act Tituba was born. After reading these first lines I started thinking that I will find more acts of sexual abuse showing how powerless slaves are, especially female slaves , because they are forced to do horrific things and if they don’t, they get punished or killed. Darnell, Abena’s owner, was groping for his penis and Abena defended herself with a cutlass managing to wound his shoulder. Abena was executed because she defended herself. This is how powerless they are because slaves cannot do anything to defend themselves unless they want to get punished or killed. Abena did not want to get raped again because she knew how it felt that is why she defended herself. Tituba saw her mother execution repeating “They hanged my mother” a moment that she won’t be able to forget and knowing that she had no power to save her. It is very frustrating knowing how slaves were treated and that not many had the courage to fight for their life because they were probably afraid of dying. If more slaves would had have the courage to fight for their life slaves owners would be at least a bit more scared.
