The return to the BHS

Our 4th visit to the Brooklyn Historic Society was different from the previous visits. We sign in like usual then we gathered to the back of the library. There were different maps but they all were of Brooklyn and New York City. The first map that we looked at was a 2011 subway map. I was accustom to see that map because i take the subway everyday. We then looked at a few very old maps. There were some with very little details and there were some with pictures on them; showing what types of animals and items you may have encountered in that area. The last map we looked at was a subway map from the 1970’s. It was different from the subway map I was use to seeing. It wasn’t as detailed and it had less and different train lines.

1890 Flatbush Sewer System Map

We was split into different groups of 4 people. My group got the chance to look at a 1890 sewer system map of the town of Flatbush. The map was signed by the Board of Street and Sewer. A notary had to confirm that the signatures were of those who are on the Broad of Street and Sewer System. On the map there were drawing of the sewer system, that shows how the would’ve looked like through the streets.
