December 12th, 2023

Hello.

Please finalize your ePortfolio before Thursday. At this link below, you can find the list of required materials: https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/ent4499fa2023-sp2024/culmination-project-submission-requirements/

This Thursday, the poster session will be at the Voorhees Theatre from 12 pm to 2:15 pm. Arrive early. By 11 am, easels should be at the theatre already. Please make sure to share the stage with your fellow students.

From 2:30 pm to 4 pm (possibly it will go until almost 4:30 pm), at V120, we will have the selected presentations. If you are among the presenters, you have been contacted already. Congrats. The other students should attend the presentations to support your fellow students, and also learn from each other. Like every semester, it was difficult to select only few of the students. This is the list of presenters:

David Binn (rework sound of old film)

Magali Calle (Set Design for Borough Hall)

Nesreen Hosameldin, Kevin Pereria, & Valentina Silva (Live show, “CUNY Around the World”)

Christian J. Marrast (short film w/graphics of butterflies)

Matthew Ramosa (Lighting assistant, botanical gardens)

Thank you!

Hope you are well.

At this point, many of you must have already given your presentation in class. This is a kind reminder that there are required materials to be included on your ePortfolio. You can view the list at this link:

https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/ent4499fa2023-sp2024/culmination-project-submission-requirements/

Before the day of poster session on Thursday, December 14th, you must finalize your ePortfolio.

The poster session will be from 12 pm to 2:15 pm at the Voorhees Theatre. The dept. will supply easels for your posters. If you need a table in addition to set up any devise such as a laptop, please communicate with Rudy the CLT in advance (RGuerrero@CityTech.Cuny.Edu), not on the day of poster session. We shouldn’t assume that things are available always. Planning matters.

Then, from 2:30 pm to 4 pm, there will be the selected poster session. The time is limited, and so we can’t select many students to present. This semester, there are many good projects, and so it would be difficult for the dept. to finalize the lineup. It will be determined on Tuesday afternoon. If you know that you will not be available then, you should let your class instructor know right away.

Even if you are not among the selected presenters, you all are expected to attend the session as part of the course activities.

All the best.

December 4th, 2023

Hope you are well!

The second week of in-class presentations begin!

Presentation Schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14lybppE_4kiCY3WESkPomdz62EF1eOZu/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=103749250087656184697&rtpof=true&sd=true

When you present, we recommend that you bring your slide show on a USB stick. When you use the instructor’s computer at V321 or in any classroom, you can’t access your Gmail account right away. There is an authentication. That’s how we lose a minute or two per presenter. This is a good experience for you. Even when you present at a national convention in the future, you shouldn’t assume that you can access your documents online easily. Always, thinks two backups.

See you soon!

November 25th, 2023

Hope you are well and are enjoying the holiday weekend!

This coming week, the in-class presentations will start. Even when you are not presenting, you should attend your fellow students’ presentations. You can also visit the other sections to attend presentations for some inspiration for yourself and to support the others!

Presentation Schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14lybppE_4kiCY3WESkPomdz62EF1eOZu/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=103749250087656184697&rtpof=true&sd=true

Reminder:

In order for you to present your culmination project, your technical advisor must approve of the completion of it. If you present without the approval, it will not count. So, please be careful.

Please don’t bring your poster at the time of your presentation. It is for your poster session day. When you present, you need to bring your slide show and if applicable, any related materials to display.

Each presentation is 10 min., and so you need to rehearse to time it and make it exciting! Recite as you rehearse, and get feedback from your family or friends. Tell them to be kind but also give you a constructive critique. We always can make some improvement. This is a great opportunity for you before you give your professional presentations in the future.

Preparation is the key for many, many things.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

After your 10 min. presentation, we will spend 5 min. for Q & A. Think of what kinds of questions you may be asked!

Note:

If you are producing a film, please read the announcements from September 28th below.

All the best!

The first set of presentations will be at 10 am, on Tuesday, November 28th (room V 321).

You should attend your classmates’ presentations at least even when you are not presenting that day. Similarly, you all are encouraged to attend the presentations in any of the three sections.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

November 13th, 2023

Hope you all are well!

This is a kind reminder that during the weeks #11 and #12, ENT 4499 classes will not meet. This is the time that you should meet with your technical advisor to discuss finalizing your project. Then, during the weeks #13 and #14, there will be your in-class presentations.

All the best!

………..

September 28th, 2023

Hope you are well.

This is the 5th week of the semester. Plan wisely to work on your project. You will be able to present only after the approval of your technical advisor: You can’t present what you think is finished. You must have read or heard about this before. But as it is a very important requirement, you can read about it here again!

As you all know, you will present your project in class during the 13th and 14th weeks of the semester. At least one additional faculty member will be present. Students from other classes are also welcome.

If you are producing a film, at least two days before your presentation, you need to upload your finalized film online, and send the link to all faculty of the department. Write a professional e-mail, introduce yourself, state what the film is about, and how long it is. This way, your film will be viewed before your presentation. During the presentation, you can show about an excerpt of 30 seconds from your film. Each presentation must be 10 min. long. Then, we will spend 5 min. for questions and answers. This will be a great opportunity for you to discuss your semester long project.

On Thursday, December 14th, it will be another big day in this course. All of you must be available:

Poster Session @ Voorhees Theatre, 12 pm – 2 pm

Selected Presentations @ V120 or TBA 2:30 pm – 04:00 pm

You will need to bring your poster for the poster session, not for your in-class presentation. You can print out your poster (PDF) in room V217. Therefore, you don’t need to go to a store for printing. However, you need to avoid a long line of students to print out the posters right before the date of poster session. That’s when often a printer could break down, too. So, plan wisely already.

Some of you will be asked to present for the second time, which will be for the entire department (selected presentations).

Thanks for reading this. All the best!

September 25th, 2023

Hello. Hope you are well!

FYI: We are now in the fifth week of the semester. That is already 1/3rd of this semester.

This is around the time that you should have your first meeting with your technical advisor. You are required to have three meetings with your advisor throughout the semester. Between each meeting, there should be some good progress, so that each meeting is productive and meaningful.

Note: Until your proposal is approved, even if you meet with your technical advisor, it will not count as any of the required three meetings. If you are still working on your proposal, we strongly suggest that you have a meeting with your advisor to finalize it (Again, it would not count as any of the three required meetings, however, but it is important that you don’t just let the time going by without much progress).

As stated in the course syllabus, our class will meet regularly for the first 10 weeks, and then, during the 11th and 12th weeks, there will be no sessions as you need to focus on finalizing your project under the guidance of your technical advisor. Get ready for your presentation at that point. Remember, you can’t present what you think is complete. Your technical advisor must approve that you have finalized your project, and then you can present your project.

During the 13the and 14th weeks, in-class presentations. You don’t need to bring your poster for your presentation.

On Thursday, December 14th, you will participate in the poster session (students in all the three sections together) at the Voorhees Theatre between 12 pm and 2 pm. Then, the selected presentations will be from 2:30 pm and 4 pm at V120.

All the best!

Hope you are well!

Some Notes:

This is the capstone course in our department, which is structured differently from most of the other courses. You need to have a great scheme/plans to succeed. In some other courses, a student could “put something together quickly,” but not in ENT 4499. Planning is the key. Please make sure that you work on a project in the field that you want to work after you graduate. Design your project, which will be helpful for your future career path. Don’t do your project just because you need to for the course. It is for your future. Be realistic in terms of time that you have, and also challenge yourself. In this course, you will be graded in different areas, including the process in addition to the final outcome.

At this point, you actually don’t have one whole semester to complete your project. Why? It is because you will be presenting your project during the 13th and 14th weeks of the semester. Please also note that your technical advisor must approve of the completion of your project in order for you to present.

All the best!

August 15, 2023

Welcome to ENT 4499 (Culmination Project), Fall 2023! Here, you can read announcements for students in all the sections of the course. You should also always consult with your section instructor (also known as faculty advisor) if you have any questions. You all should also have a technical advisor who is an expert of the field of your project such as sound, lighting, video, scenery, management, game, music technology, and so on. Not all ENT/MTEC professors are available for the course (the workload hours are assigned and also are limited), and so you need to make sure that your technical advisor is indeed assigned for this course. Find out!
