Randy Cabrera – Listening Log

Song : Polo G – Wishing For A Hero (FT. BJ The Chicago Kid)

3 Repetitions I notice

  • I notice the same beat playing played throughout the whole song. ( Piano is being used consistently )
  • The way Polo G raps throughout the whole song, he doesn’t slow down and is always on beat.
  • Towards the end of the song the choir repeat the lyrics ” that’s just the way it is “

3 Changes I notice

  • Throughout the song some changes I notice is the different type of social issues he discuss. He goes from police brutality to being raised in the hood.
  • I also notice how it changes from him rapping and then the choir comes in at the end.
  • The beat of the music changes when the choir joins in at the end.

3 Phrases that strike me

  • ” You ain’t my color, then you don’t know the struggle of livin black “
  • ” Cops Kill us and we protest, what type of sh*t is that? “
  • ” I’m from where we’re unheard and we can’t speak, We go to school, they try to tell us what we can’t be “

Due to the recent events with rioting and protesting, this song came to mind as soon as I read the what we had to do in this assignment. The 3 phrases Polo G says, strikes me because of the current situation the world is witnessing right now. The death of George Floyd caused an outrage in many states throughout America and parts of the song describe what’s happening in the world. Especially when He says ” Cops kill us and we protest, what type of shit is that “, really made me think why is this even a problem. We shouldn’t be going through this regardless of what skin color you are, you shouldn’t be mishandled by cops. This song just speaks a lot on current social issues and Its phrases are what some people can relate to.

Song : Heart on Ice Remix – Rodwave (ft. Lil Durk )

    3 Repetitions I notice-

The piano throughout the whole song is consistent.
The beat is the same through the whole song.
Rod wave repeats ” Put my heart on ice heart on ice “.

3 Changes I notice in the music-

It goes from singing to rapping.
It transitions from Rod Wave singing to Lil Durk Rapping
I notice how the flow of both rappers change because of their style of rap/singing.

    3 phrases/lyrics that strike me.

” Mama say its my fault, it’s my fault, I wear my heart on my sleeve ”
” No one could understand, I had way too much aggression that built 0ver the years of my abandoned adolescence ”
” Thinkin of  a way I can make these Millions, Maybe that’ll take this pain away and clear up all these rainy days, yeah “.

This song is very emotional and talks about how people have betrayed rod wave so many times. When he says ” thinkin of way to make the millions, maybe that” take  this pain away and clear up all these rainy days “, It stood out to me because I don’t believe money will solve all of your problems. It may  make you happy temporarily but it won’t be long term. This song can speak to people who didn’t have anyone that help them come up and to be careful who you trust.

Song : XXXTENTACION – Riot (Remix) ft. 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G

    3 Repetitions I notice-

the drums in the background is the same throughout the song.
X, is talking about current society issues like police brutality throughout the songs.
The way X raps is consistent, he doesn’t slow down or speed.

3 Changes I notice in the music-

One thing I noticed that change was how it went from rapping to a recording of someones voice giving a speech.
The audio’s quality of the rappers voice changes because It uses rappers voices from years ago.
At the end Tupac’s part is more slowed down because it’s his style of rapping.

    3 phrases/lyrics that strike me.

” But ni***s like a tast force, mobbin on the streets and robbin stores with ski masks, huh ”
” You rather hear me say ” fuck the black prejudice ” let’s murder different races, grow hatred and form irrelevant ”
” This is not a gang, quit violence, and grow a pair ”

These 3 phrases strike me the most because this song was uploaded on August 24, 2017 and the first quote I mentioned shows what society just went through. stores got looted and people wearing masks robbing stores. The second quote speaks up about how people hate on others due to their race when it shouldn’t have to be like that. and for the last quote it says a lot, the violence needs to stop, whether its police brutality or gang violence it all has to stop.

Song : Lil baby – The bigger Picture

    3 Repetitions I noticed :

    – I notice how Lil baby is consistently talking about current social issues like police brutality.
    – The beat is also repeating and not different to follow the flow of the rappers lyrics.
    – Lil baby repeats ” it’s bigger than black and white “.

    3 changes I noticed :

    – I noticed how in the beginning of the song it’s a pre recording of a speech.
    – instead of talking about racism and police brutality he talks about how covid disappeared randomly.
    – At the end his voice becomes staticky and fades away.

    3 Phrases that strike me-

” I find it crazy the police will shoot you and know that you dead but still tell you to freeze ”
” it’s too many mothers that’s grieving, they killing us for no reason ”
” It’s bigger than black and white, it’s a problem with the whole way of life, it can’t change over night ”

The first phrase strikes me because of how true that statement is. Police would still ask a wounded suspect who ends up dead to freeze. That’s just cruel and not a human thing to do. It’s disgusting. The second phrase also strikes me because mothers out there are losing their sons for no reason, some may not even be doing anything but just minding their business and being innocent. No one would want their son to be killed for no reason. The last phrase strikes me because it just opens up a whole conversation on how the way we are living with each other is not good at all. People hate each other because of the skin color they are born with. We should not be living that way. It won’t change over night and I don’t think it would ever change because people are taught to hate. We need to come together and fix what’s wrong with this world.

Song : Juice WRLD – Righteous

    3 Repetitions I notice –

    – I notice how juice wrld is talking about the problems he’s going through and the drugs he uses to get over them throughout the song.
    – He also talks about the demons he fights throughout the song.
    – Juice wrld repeats the same verse ” my anxiety is the size of a planet “.

    3 changes I notice –

    – The changes in how he sings / raps through out the song is unique. He can start off by being consistent and then changes his flow by slowing down and starts singing.
    – At the beginning he says the same thing at the end but the tone in the voice is different. It doesn’t fade in the beginning but at the end his voice starts going away.
    – the beat resets after the chorus, and he slowly starts singing which is different from the other verse.

    3 Phrases that Strike me-

    – ” My Anxiety is the size of a planet ”
    – ” I know that the truth is hard to digest ”
    – ” we may die this evening, coughing, wheezing, bleeding ”

The reason these phrases strike me because with what’s going on in the world right now with corona virus, and how it affected my family my anxiety has been high. I still can’t believe that my grandma was a victim to covid 19 and that’s why the truth is hard to digest. And with the last phrase I believe anything can happen to anyone. That’s why it’s good to make amends with people you have problems with because you’ll never know when their last day can be.

  5. Listening Log #6 DUE 06/22

    Song: Juice Wrld – Legends.

    3 repetitions I noticed-

    – Throughout the song in the background you can hear juice wrld playing with a lighter.
    – The tone in his voice is faded in the beginning and middle and end.
    – He talks about how people are dying at an early age because of the things they do the toxic things that occur in the world.

    3 changes I noticed-

    – at the end of the song his voice has more auto tune to it and is higher pitch because he starts singing more.
    – I noticed how his voice in the chorus becomes more echoing than the rest of the song.
    – When his voice is echoing, the beat of the song changes, there is no more drums anymore.

3 phrases that strike me :
    – ” All legends fall in the making ”
    – ” We aint making it pass 21 ”
    – ” they tell me ima be a legend but I dont want that title now, cause all legends seem to die out ”

The reason these 3 phrases strike me because Juice wrld is talking about a friend who also was an artist that passed away due to the drugs he took. What’s ironic about this song that he made is that when juice wrld passed away as well, he too was on a lot of drugs and he was so young. He just turned 21 and for him to pass away was just shocking and ironic because of the song he wrote. Especially when he says ” they tell me ima be a legend but I dont want that title now, cause all legends seem to die out ” it’s just so scary to think about it. r.i.p juice wrld.
