Listening Log Week 1 -Brittny Sobers

Song – “All I ask” by Adele

  • “No one knows me like you do.

And since you’re the only one that matters

Tell me who do I run to?”

These lyrics strikes me because when she sings this part I can feel the pain in her voice when she asks who do I run to. Her tone stood out to me mostly.

  • “Take me by the hand while we do what lovers do

It matters how this ends

Cause what if I never love again?”

In the song Adele repeats these lyrics 3 times throughout the entire song.

  • “ I don’t wanna be cruel or vicious

And I aint asking for forgiveness”

This part of the song the song completely slows down almost to a stop then
“All I ask is

If this is my last night with you

Hold me like I’m more than just a friend

Give me a memory I can use

Take my by the hand while we do what lovers do

It matters how this ends

Cause what if I never love again?”

When this last part of the song comes on after the stop to the music the song picks up and Adele picks the beat up as well as her tone and volume. She becomes louder and more powerful as she closes the song.

  1. 2.) Song – “Location Remix” by Khalid, Lil Wayne and Khelani

“They so superficial, don’t understand how we’re chillin’
We don’t need a lot, we got us and that’s why we winnin’
To them it’s a park bench, us a magic carpet
Little trips to Target turn to avant garde shit.”

These lyrics strike me maybe because they are personal. In my relationship the idea and concept of genuine non materialist, superficial love is what I aim to have. With my partner now when we go to Target those trips are meaningful to me, just spending time with them not mattering where is what is important to me.

    “Send me your location,
    let’s focus on communicating
‘Cause I just need the time and place to come through”

These lyrics are repeated the 3 times throughout the song.

The changes I noticed from the original song is there are two new styles of music added to the song. Lil Wayne opens the song up with a rapping style. More sexual then how Khalid originally sang the song. One verse Lil Wayne says is

“I kiss the right spots, I know all the places
Oh I lick the right spots, that’s an ultimatum”.

Another change is Khelani’s style of music. Khelani’s style adds a more relatable perspective (like the rest of her music). She relates to the audience how she loves this person no matter what anyone has to say. One verse Khelani says is

“Cause I don’t really care about rules
I don’t really care about rules
I just really care about you.”

Different from Khalid originally singing to a person that he doesn’t seem to have such an emotional connection the way Khelani sings her part.

  2. 3.) Song “Tattooed Heart” by Ariana Grande

“I wanna say we’re going steady
    Ha
    Like it’s 1954,
    No,
It doesn’t have to be forever
Just as long as I’m the name
    On your tattooed heart”

These lyrics strike me because throughout the song the song has an old school 50’s style beat. From the beginning of the song as she scatting and harmonizing with the instruments. When Grande sings this part it is as if the song emphasis’ 1954 through the beat. Grande wants us to understand this is an “old school” vibe kind of song. This also strikes me because growing up my parents came from an older generation where ‘solid oldie goldie’ music was their choice of music. Artist such as Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, etc. were songs I grew up listening to. Listening to these flow and style that Grande Introduces in her song, makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

    “Tattooed heart”

This is repeated in the song 23 times.

Changes I’ve noticed throughout the song was every time Grande sang “Tattooed heart” the song is slowed down before the word is introduced then instantly sped up and louder as she harmonizes the words.

  3. 4.) Song “Black” by Buddy feat Asap Ferg

With everything going on in the country. With the entire world divided by race. The police brutality, racism, white supremacist, and stupidity has the world on fire. Being an African-American an experiencing racism my entire life now, a woman in my twenties I fear for my next generation. I’m ANGRY that we still have to explain the concept of racism to people. It’s frustrating that being BLACK in America automatically puts a target on your back … chest … head. It’s funny, everything that is happening I wouldn’t want to be any color. I wouldn’t want to change my Afro-Caribbean heritage for anything. I’m so proud and blessed to be black. Even if some people don’t understand and will treat me differently because of the color of my skin, I will ALWAYS want to be BLACK. This is what this song represents.

The lyrics that strike me –

“I feel like Trayvon with this black hoodie on
    Huey P. Newton, Black revolution
I’m with a Nubian Queen and some illegal aliens
I got a black fist balled up and it ain’t just me, it’s all us
    Four hundred years of oppression
I’m about to get me that black Tesla
Black skid marks on the pavement
Cops wanna see me in a black cage
    Black on black on black
Master Juba with the tap dance
    Gucci with the Dapper Dan
Tell ’em kiss my black ass
Ridin’ on the dyno with black mags
Just another black man tryin’ stay up out the casket
    Yeah, black don’t crack
Matter fact, where the fuck our forty acres at?
We black on black on black on black on black”

Trayvon Martin was shot and killed February 16th 2012 by George Zimmerman for racial profiling. I was a teenager when I found out a young black man going to the store to get an Arizona and skittles was shot and killed by a racist who took his life because of the color of his skin. These lyrics will always strike me because of the fear for my black brothers, black father, black love, my black son. It’s sad.

    “Black”
This is repeated in the song more than 60 times. (I lost count at 50 lol )

Changes I noticed was the flow of style when ASAP ferg started to rap his verse. It slowed down as he talks about his heritage of being mixed and the concept of Willie Lynch as he says
    “Mix blacks to dilute blacks
Don’t want blacks to produce blacks”

This is honestly a good song, I suggest to listen because the hip hop / rap style beat and flow… this song bumps.
