Listening Log Week 1 – Draft

The song I chose was Complexion(A Zulu Love)

  1. Two lines that were striking and stuck with me were,
  • “Light don’t mean you smart, bein’ dark don’t make you stupid
And frame of mind for them bustas, ain’t talkin’ “Woo-hah!”
  • “12 years of age, thinkin’ my shade too dark
I love myself, I no longer need Cupid.”

Growing up was hard for me because I’m simply black. Many people, friends , even teachers made me feel bad because the color of my skin. It makes you believe from a young age you will never be somebody. Thanks to my family I was taught you love yourself and accept who you are because everyones life is important.

2. Three changes in the music,

  • The beat changes when the chorus starts
  • Different instruments are introduced midway through the song
  • No music is played at the end of the song

3. Three repetitions I notice,

  • The words and beat for the chorus are the same “Complexion (two-step) Complexion don’t mean a thing (it’s a Zulu love)
Ooh, Complexion (two-step). It all feels the same (it’s a Zulu love)”
  • The beat of the drum stays the same through out the song.
  • The words in the song are all the same pitches.

  1. Ego remix Beyonce ft. Kanye West

Three phrases that strike me are

    “Some women were made
    But me, myself
I like to think that I was created
    For a special purpose”
“Ego so strong, if you ain’t know
I don’t need no beat I can sing it with piano”
    “He got a big ego
Such a huge ego, such a huge ego
But I love his big ego”
These Lines all strike me in the same way. One really important thing my grandma always tells me is to dream big and most importantly have a great ego. It is also a great value to have in life that will take you places you couldn’t think of.

    Three repetitions in the music

The piano and drums stay the same throughout out the song.
Beyonce kept repeating the same words throughout the chorus to show how how much she loves his ego
Beyonce kept the same singing voice all throughout the song.
    Three Changes in the music

During Beyoncés part, a different beat is played as opposed to Kanyes.
Towards the end of the song a piano is all you an hear for sound
During a part Beyonce goes from just talking to singing.
