Beginning of Class Writing: Reflection on Your Articles

During today’s beginning of class writing assignment, I would like you to write a memo reflecting on the practice of reading articles related to your professional interests and writing about those readings.

Address your memo to Professor Ellis and use the subject, “Reflection on Professional Readings.”

These are some ideas about what to respond to in your reflection: What purposes do you think this kind of professionalism serve? What have you gained from this process? Have you learned new things, and if so, what are they? Since you read an article for today’s class, you can incorporate it into your reflection in summary or as an example.

Below your reflection, write an APA bibliographic citation for the article that you read.

Copy-and-paste your reflection memo into a comment made to this blog post.

Every single week that I attended Professor Ellis’ class I was asked to peruse some type of professional literary work. In his first class I attended that was taught by him, ENG1710 Intro to Language and Technology, he assigned mostly scholarly essays and book chapters written by distinguished peoples. I believe that reading the provoking prose and thoughts that came along with these professional writings has allowed my mind to grow exponentially. I learned about important and relevant topics that I would have never heard of if it wasn’t for that ENG1710 class. Through the discovery of these topics I have been able to gain a greater understanding of how technology is fundamentally connected to our humanity. I’ve taken the thoughts, topics, and discussions from this class and have applied them to not only other classes in City Tech but to my life. My mindset has been forever changed. I think about things on another level now, a whole different plane than the one I was viewing the world through pre 2017.

My thirst for knowledge and truth has always been alive and well but the readings from this class have only increased that tenfold. There was a time I didn’t like to read non-fiction books or scholarly essays but through this class I’ve realized the importance and the value of doing so. I no longer dispise assignments like these in my other classes in fact I welcome them into my life. The accruement of knowledge is fundamentally necessary in understanding ourselves as well as the world around us and I for one plan to never stop obtaining that knowledge. It may be impossible to know the answers to all of life’s great questions but only through research and professional reading will you be able to truly form your own opinionated answers to these questions. I believe that these professional reading have greatly affected my mind and my livelihood for the better.

In the current class I am taking taught by Professor Ellis, ENG 1133 Specialized Communication for Technology Students, we were instructed to read one magazine article of our choosing every week. The article had to be from a magazine relevant to our career. I may work as a paraprofessional in a school but my true passion has always been poetry and writers, so when I was searching through the seemingly endless amount of magazine shelves in Barnes and Nobles and stumbled upon a magazine titled “Poets and Writer” I knew that I needed to purchase it for this class. I took Poets and Writers as well as a few other writing magazines home and began reading and annotating. At first I did so with a grain of salt. “Whatever.” I said to myself. “I just need this for a grade.” However as the weeks went on I began to actually enjoy reading through these magazine articles. It went from a chore and a homework assignment to something that I enjoyed doing. Now I love to reading through these magazines and learning about people who are successful in something I too wish to be successful in one day. The magazines also provided me with an abundance of information regarding different writing and poetry contests. This was an amazing find for me. It gave me many outlets for the multitude of poems and writings that I have lying dormant on my google docs. Since then I have entered works in several and I plan to continue doing so.

I think an import aspect of finding these articles out of a magazine is the physicality of it. In this day and age when tasked with an assignment so many of us are immediately run to our computers and look for sources via the internet and the first stop is usually Google. However, I believe that forcing us to go out and buy a physical copy of a magazine was very beneficial. It taught me that as much as it may seem like it, the internet is not the be all and end all of information in the planet. So many credible sources are out there and available to us and because of our fixation and fascination with this electronic based information that has been created, we tend to neglect those that are paperbound. Thanks to this class I’ve learned that the world of information is bountiful and consists of more than our Google search engine. And when one wishes for the accumulation of knowledge one must leave no stone, or page, unturned.

In this memo I’m going to talk about decisions that can help solve your problems.

A lot of time in businesses there’s decision to make. Sometimes hard ones, it’s important to examine the problem from different angle before making a decision. It doesn’t have to be only business decision, in general well thought decision will give you best results.

Writing about my interest have been great. My dream is to be my own boss one day. Reading and writing about different subjects that has to do with managing or owning a business has already prepared me and got me thinking about who I need to be in order to own a business successfully. This article talks about decision making and how it can affect your business if not carefully made. Often times I find myself reacting to situations, but by reading this article I know to start changing that about mebecause reacting will only hurt me as a business owner and I don’t want that.
