Future is bright

Society tends to diminish hard work if a person does not attend or graduate from college or university. My name is Christopher Peralta and I am a full time student in city tech. City tech is a school who wants their students to choose there major as soon as possible. The major I want to be in is computer science. The career path that I want to pursue is a software engineer for a private or major company. This career path is best for me because I always wanted to help with programming and the way the software functions so it can be easier for others who don’t really understand technology and a engineer makes good amount of money.

In this essay you will read about how the career path I am pursuing is the right for me and how my major plays a big role in my road to my career choice. Also I will be using some research to make m case a lot stronger and some other sources I will use in this essay is using my counselor in a interview to help support my thesis statement. I am here in city tech but I will transfer over to another school to finish my degree. This essay is constructed for those who need help in what they want to become in life and my essay is just one example out of many others.

I have never been a money hungry person but growing up was tough and the neighborhood I am from is not the best either. I am not going to sit here and lie and tell you I was extremely poor and things like that, I do have both of my parents and they did support my brothers and I growing up. Just looking at how hard they work to pay for everything for us really motivates me to get a good paying job. One reason why I am pursuing software engineering is because it is a good paying job and according to Ted Samson (a staff writer at info world)“software engineer’s base salary is currently $92,648 and marking an increase of 2.5% since 2011”. So even if some people think $90,000 plus is not enough it’s only increasing according to Ted Samson. This is one reason why becoming a software engineer is best for my future plans.

Me being a programmer can be essential to society because not only would I be helping a major firm in the future I would also be planning a program in computers to help those who don’t really understand advanced technology. In the near future once I get my degree I want to be in a place where I can make a difference make programs to help others just like how Steven Kelly said in a article “allowing expert developers to encapsulate their expertise and make work easier, faster and more fun for the rest”. What Steven Kelly is saying is let the professionals do their work and the rest can just enjoy it. I love to help people and if that’s me making something to make your life a little less stressful it is something I am looking forward to.

I had an interview with my brother Roberto Peralta and he is currently in the computer science major and one of the many questions I asked him was switching from criminal justice to computer science easy? He replied, “Any major you’re in is never easy you just need the motivation to go through all the obstacles”. This really helped me personally because if you set your mind in something you can always accomplish it. Having an interview with your older brother was kind of normal to me because I look for advice from him all the time. The career he is pursing is different than mine he is pursuing becoming a database developer which is slightly different from mine but towards the end of the interview I asked him what is one thing you noticed while being in college that can help in your future? “Good habits” at first I didn’t really understand but as he explained it to me it made a lot of sense. What that means is if you build good habits starting from now in the future everything will become second nature to you, like if one of my habits is to always do my homework on time no matter what, in the future if I have a big project from my job its something normal for me to complete it early and hand it in on time. This interview relates to my thesis because interviewing my brother was really helpful it was like a blueprint on the key components to succeed in college and I succeed in whatever college I plan to go to its more likely I will get the job/career I want.

One crucial example is security while you are on your computer. I know there are anti virus but that anti virus cant help you if someone is trying to steal your identity or your credit card number in a cyber way. Discover magazine had a interesting column on cyber thieves and all the money they took from big companies. According to Jeff Wheelwright from Discover magazine said “Cyberthieves stole credit- and debit-card numbers from up to 56 million customers of the retail giant Home Depot, even more than the 40 million they stole in 2013 from Target”.

Computer science is something I am really intrigued to because as I said before a software engineer is my main focus as a career choice. In this paragraph I will talk about what are some required things I need to do in order to succeed in my major. According to the city tech catalog “The College will grant an associate in science (AS) degree with a major in Computer Science upon satisfactory completion of the required 60 specific credits”. Some of those required credits come from English, calculus, and physics. The reason why I am transferring is because I want a bachelors degree and city tech only offers an associates but in the mean while this is best because I am getting some of those credits done while I am here so by the time I transfer I will have some credits for my major. This helps me because its one step closer to the main goal, which is becoming software engineer.

At the end of the day people don’t really know what they want to do in the future until they try something that eventually leads them to there goal. For me is college right now which will lead me to the career I want which is computer science. Anyone who is interested in this major will really like it because it keeps you thinking and always learning something new. Even though the computer science department in the city is not at a high level according to Eliza Krigman said, “trying to draw attention to the fact that there is a crisis in computer science education in our country”. If you are in the computer science department in city tech I recommend you going to the library to learn more about it or if you just want to talk Danny Murphy from seek is great to talk to.

My name is Fjoralba Hoxha and I am currently a student at  New York City College of Technology (City Tech) majoring in Legal Assistant studies. After a lot of research in the library and the College Catalog , I figured out that this major won’t give me the best career in my future. What I want to major in is Physical Therapy, known as PT, because of the good salary, job security, and being able to be a movement expert. In this essay I will state some background information about this major and the career it provides also I will state supporting evidence on why this is the best career for me.

To gain more of an understanding of my decision to be in a Physical Therapy major I think it will be better if i start with some facts about this career. Physical therapists are specialists in treating disorders of the human body primarily by physical means. “Whether the condition results from injury, disease or other causes, they focus primarily on those individuals who have disturbed function related to the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary and integumentary (skin) systems.” (College Catalog, 187)  The field requires good communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to perform  physical activity. To be a Physical therapist you should enjoy working with people and outside a traditional office environment, which I personally would love because I enjoy being surrounded by lots of people. Based on the KU Medical Center The University of Kansas website “The degree required to become a practicing physical therapist in the U.S today is the Doctor of Physical Therapy(DPT) All states and territories in the United States also require a license to practice physical therapy. Each State requires the National Board Examination (NPTE) but each state may additional criteria for obtaining licensure.” (web)

The first reason why I want to get a degree in Physical therapy is because of the good salary. According to Bureau of labor statistics “A physical therapist earns an average of $38.39 per hour which  leads to $79.860 per year” (web). One of the great things about this career is that for the most part, the frequency of finding a job is really high, but this also depends on the field in this industry that you want to work in. This kind of salary will provide a great financial stability especially because money has become more essential to everyday life.

As a second reason why I want to get a degree in Physical Therapy is because of Job Security. For Americans looking for a career in a struggling job market and down economy, a career in physical therapy could be the perfect answer. “The demand for physical therapists is expected to spike upward by an astonishing 30% between 2008 and 2018 which is a much quicker rate than average. Currently, there are approximately 185,500 licensed physical therapists in the United States, and that number is expected to jump to 241,700 over the next 10 years. Forbes ranked physical therapists as having 1 of “The Ten Happiest Jobs,” according to articles published in 2013 and 2011.” (Forbes) Physical therapists also have high job satisfaction according to the 2007 results of the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center survey, as reported in The Washington Post. More than three-quarters of physical therapists polled reported to be “very satisfied” with their occupations. Physical therapists were second only to clergy and the only health care professionals in the top 5.

My last and more enjoyable reason to why I want to be a Physical Therapist is to be a movement expert. What is more interesting than knowing how can every part of the body get healed  and how it got hurt in the first place. Physical therapists are highly educated experts in the movement and function of the human body. The goal of a physical therapist is to give the patient’s ability to move, reduce pain, and prevent disability. Physical therapy is an essential element of patient care. Depending on the particular needs of a patient, physical therapists may mobilize a joint or massage a muscle to promote proper movement and function just basing on exercises etc. “Physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, ultrasound (high-frequency waves that produce heat), hot packs, and ice in addition to other treatments when appropriate” (web).

To make this essay and my research more interesting I had to interview any professor/doctor with the information that I needed for this major and career. Luckily for me a friend of mine suggested I email professor/doctor Joseph Hale from Queens College which was very kind to answer some of my questions even though he did not know me at all. One of the first questions that I asked him was “Professor Hale, are you happy with your career?” He replied saying that it took him a lot of work and effort to get to where he is now, but he states “It was all worth it!”. He also tells me what is required for this major and for a future job which were lots of exams such as National Board Examination which every states needs it. What got me thinking was when he wrote to me “I hope you have the same passion about this career in the future as you do now because trust me this career needs a lot of patients and lots of reading.” Am I ready for this major? Am I wasting my time? What if I never get a job? I’m sure I’m not the only one with these type of questions in the head but this is why this research and especially this interview with a very kind professor helped me a lot. Just like doctor Hale said “Patience is everything for any field in life!”

Not knowing what is going to happen in the future terrifies me. Even though online research, college catalogs, interviews helped me a lot, sometimes I think that there are more facts that i should know about before taking a major step in life such as choosing your career. College is a whole new world for me and so far is going great, but I just hope that by the end of my 4th year when I’m kissing my diploma and smiling to my friends and family, I will be proud of myself and also make my family proud as well.

  Web Design

       In our everyday lives we see color and illustrations everywhere. They are a form of art and creativity that is used by designers to get our attention. Whether we realize it or not, design has a huge impact on us. We are constantly surfing the net and visiting many websites. these sites were developed by designers and they made the websites we use such as Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, etc. The fame of these websites have a lot to do with the good design used in them. This interested me and it is why I chose to major in Graphic designing. I am currently a freshman at City Tech and I want to pursue a career as a web developer. This career will allow me to use my artistic and creativity skills along with learning to use different software. This career is best for me because I like to up-date myself with new technology, I’m a team player and because designers are on demand and get paid well. In this essay, I will talk about what Graphic Design is, why it is the best career for me as well as how City Tech is preparing me to ensure my success as a designer.

The 2014-2-15 college catalog tells us that Graphic designing careers are” Advertising agencies, graphic design firms, corporate communications departments, publishing companies, television studios and other design-related operations offer many challenging and rewarding careers as advertising art directors, graphic designers, computer graphics and website designers, illustrators, comic book artists and packaging designers” (Pg.213). This program will teach me what I will have to be able to do in order to obtain a career as a web designer,” They will be able be able to solve creative problems while applying design and studio skills in a professional environment” (Pg.213). The catalog also includes some recommendations such as, ” A core of advanced design courses will prepare students to meet the challenges of the profession: senior project, portfolio, the design team and an internship”. (Pg. 215). According to Career Directions: Web Designer, ” They are web designers, and they merge creativity and marketing, merchandising, technology. and business” (Pg. 24, techdirection). This explains what a wed designer’s job is. A web designer creates their clients websites and to do this ” This involves developing a graphic design that effectively communicates the ideas being promoted by the site. A web designer may take part in the initial planning of a website, meeting with the client to discuss ideas for the layout and organization of the site, the colors and images to use, and other matters concerning overall graphic design” ( Pg. 24. techdirections). This example explains that being able to tell what layout and colors will work well for the website is something that a designer should be great at  In order to get a job a job,” The ticket to entering the field is to build a website. Countless numbers of web designers have gotten noticed by building websites for nonprofits or community groups, or by creating a personal website” (Pg.25, techdirections).

Transparency Project for Graphic Principles Class.

Now that I’ve given you some background information about my job and career, I’d like to explain why this is right for me. First of all, I will be able to earn good money. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, ” The median annual wage for web developers was $62,500 in May 2012″. Not only is the salary great but, ” employment of web developers is projected to grow 20% from 2012 to 2022. Faster than the average for all occupations demand will be driven by the growing popularity of mobile devices and e-commerce”. This is good because with a pay of $62,500, it is enough to live comfortably. I can be pleased with my salary and have enough to support family. I will also be able to go  on vacations and have a house and a car. These things matter a lot to me. With an increase in a demand for web designers, I will not have to worry about my chances of getting a job. I have to do well in school and show employers that I am the one that should get the job.

As a web developer, it is essential that I know how to use mainly a computer but its also very crucial to know that technological advancement occurs about six moths to a year. I want to be on the leading edge of technological change, because I want to use that knowledge to further my advancement. To exemplify how technological advancements will effect me as a designer, I chose the article “Web Accessibility Guidelines: A lesson from the evolving Web” by Simon Harper & Alex Q. Chen. As stated in the article, ” While the heterogeneity of the web is one of its major strengths in that it is adaptable and flexible, it also one of its major failings in that there is no control of the predicted outcome”. This proves that as the web advances, it is easy to adapt to but with this we cant really be sure of how our work may turn out or how well it will do unless we test it out and bare some losses. Another example is “In these ways, we see that by understanding the way that the web has evolved we can predict the way that the web will evolve”. This shows that we can learn a lot from the evolution of the web. We can learn particularly what it is that’s being changed to interest people and how we can use that when we are designing. By learning the reasons and techniques, we can use them to our advantage to create modern, pleasing and work that trends in society. Knowing what society will dislike or think is cool is very important since it is what determines if our ideas are good enough or not. The whole idea is the use technology to its best and the faster we catch on why it evolves in the way it does, we can predict what we would have to do to please clients so that their websites run. I am always reading what every update is about and trying to learn more about new features so I know that I will always be on top of technological evolutions.

To be a good designer, I need to be a good team player. I know that I will be working with many others at my work place who will have different ideas and will work differently. To support this statement I chose the article, “Sharing designer and user perspectives of website evaluation: a cross – campus collaborative learning experience” by Penny Collings and Jon Pearce. As the author wrote, “Some usability evaluation processes involve heuristic evaluation in which several usability experts evaluate the interface and judge its compliance with usability heuristics; some involve users, who provide feedback by undertaking typical tasks which the system has been designed to support”. This says that different people will have different views than you. It is mostly about how you learn to use others and your views into the work and learn to work together. The article also said, “It was a good idea that we were encouraged to test the site individually and then prepare a combined report at the group level… this allows a greater understanding of the concepts, procedures and usefulness of usability testing.” This proves that even though one may be creative enough to create great work, working in a group will always be better since there are more ideas and thoughts put into the work (Pg. 276, Sharing perspectives of web site evaluation). Another supporting detail from the article is ” Students gained insights into the usability evaluation process, the value of independent usability tests of their web site designs and the process of also providing such feedback to others. They also extended their understanding of how to use computer-mediated communication to engage in collaborative work and learning” ( Pg. 277, Sharing perspectives of web site evaluation). This goes to prove that researchers have tested and found how much more effective a work is when there is feedback and collaboration from others involved.

City Tech is one of the few CUNY’s that have Graphic Designing. So far I have gotten good advisement from Advisors and Professors as to what I should be doing to make sure I am doing well and what is right for me. I reached out to one of my Professor’s who I believe is a very good designer and is very intelligent. I emailed her with three questions about what I can do to prepare myself physically and personality wise.

  1) What qualities do you consider necessary for a good designer? Qualities I consider      necessary for a good designer.1. someone who is a good listener.2. someone who is  interested in understanding the needs of the client and is willing to clarify these with the    client.3. someone who can work by themselves or in a team as needed.4. someone who is   willing to do a good deal of research appropriate to the problem/brand/project being solved.5. someone who knows business practices for the nature of the task you are hired for: i.e. once a business plan is written, can state clearly how many rounds of corrections are to take place and what the cost of additional ones are 6. someone who does not whine, and always has a good professional attitude.7. someone who can present their ideas in a professional manner 8. someone who is always prepared.9. someone who knows how hard creativity must be worked at and likes the process.10. someone who is proud of their work but not vain about it.11. someone who works within deadlines. (Par 1, Rosenblatt)

2) Can you tell me about a time you were under pressure and how you dealt with it? Or any advice on how someone else should deal with pressure? I was designer and art director for an educational publication on Math that was part of a series for 2nd graders. The head of the firm had hired the child who would model in the shoot, (unfortunately she had now worked with the math tools yet. She was too young.) I made the props for the cover shoot, (there were 2 boxes I build with stenciled question marks on them). the day of the shoot, had not slept for 48 hours and still had to work with the kid, the photographer and a rather immature young woman who was supposed to assist me, but instead kept messing up the layout I had brought to guide the sequence of the shoot. I handled it by indicating when I was ready, and worked well with the kid, who liked to do things herself so I had her write big numbers on a white board which we shot in several of the pages. I got through it by staying focused on what had to get done, remembering who I had to work with, and not getting angry at the assistant. It was a great effort, but worth it. There are many more stories, but they all had to do with remaining focused on what had to get done in as professional a manner as possible.(Par 2, Rosenblatt)

3) What are some things I can do to better prepare myself for a job as a designer? The things you can do to better prepare yourself as a designer. I think first: respect what you have to learn in school. Do it with an open heart. Learn the principles you use to command visual strength. Find multiple ways of getting to solutions. Learn to do visual research – a lot of it. Learn typography like your life depended upon it. (It does!) Become accustomed to doing things more than once if asked to. Be mindful of preparation work on any project. Learn the value of constructive and even challenging criticism. Do not flinch from ideas stronger than your own or different from your own. Be  curious about the world and just about everything in it. Learn to look things up if you do not know something (in more reliable and respectable places than Wikipedia) and learn to enjoy these tasks.(Par 3, Rosenblatt)

Designers play a big role in our everyday lives. Web design is a job where you can let all your creativity run. You get to use many different tools, new software and you get to work on something new everyday rather than working on something for weeks like in other jobs. I believe becoming a web designer is the right choice and that its best for me. Once I get a job as a designer, it will be a very big thing and it will make me very happy. I hope to gain as much as I can from City Tech and not only to work for the Degree but also to learn valuable lessons that will help me become successful as a designer. Lastly, I would advice that, do what makes you happy. No matter how uncool of a job it is, if its what you love, all that matters is that you’re happy at the end. You can learn more about web design through YouTube videos, websites, and u can even start by creating your own website! Try out different layouts, learn to use Photoshop or illustrator and I guarantee that you will enjoy it.

Nursing Career

I am currently a freshman at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), aspiring to major in nursing. Just having entered college, there are many things I need to focus on. Lately, I have been reflecting ahead in order to place myself on the correct path on becoming a neonatal nurse. This is the best career for me because I have always wanted to help other people especially babies, there is an ample amount of nursing jobs available, and the salary will give me a chance to live comfortably. In this essay, I will give you background information on the major nursing and neonatology, give supporting evidence on why this is the best career for me, and state how City Tech is preparing me to achieve this career.

There are many important things to know about nursing. After doing more research on the nursing major, I gathered a lot of new information. The City Tech Catalog 2014-2015 tells me that, “The nursing program prepares students to become members of the health team in health service agencies and hospitals.” (College Catalog, 167) In this major, I will safely meet the needs of patients in different settings. The subspecialty in nursing that I want to pursue with my education from City Tech is neonatology. In order to become a neonatal nurse, you must be a Registered Nurse (RN); I would have to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) after completing the nursing courses. A neonatal nurse works with infants up to 6 weeks after birth; this varies depending on the severity of the baby’s health. As a neonatal nurse, I would be working with newborn, sick and premature babies. The article “The parent–nurse relationship in the neonatal intensive care unit context – closeness and emotional involvement” tells me that, “Providing support to parents has become a crucial part of nurses’ responsibilities.”(Fregan and Helseth, 667) I will have to learn how to help parents handle these hard moments in their life and provide support they need during different types of situations. There are three levels in neonatal nursing. I would most likely start in level 1, which is just a healthy newborn nursery. There are also levels two and three; the third level is the level I want to work in, which is working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. (NICU) I can work at hospitals that have NICUs, which a lot of hospitals have.

There are many reasons why I believe neonatal nursing is the best career for me. One of them being that I have always wanted to help other people, especially babies. In this field, not only would I be taking care of neonates with different complications, but I would also be helping parents cope with difficult situations. The article “Development in neonatal care and nursing responses” says that, “Together with the increased understanding of newborn physiology and pathology that has grown over the last century, there have been remarkable developments in neonatal nursing, technology, respiratory support, nutrition, and family-centered care in the neonatal unit.” (Fallon and Healy, 21) The neonatal nursing unit is improving more and more each year and I would love to be a part of that improvement. The fact that I could provide care to an infant that needs to survive is heartwarming.

Nursing is also the best career for me because there are many jobs available. This is a good thing for nursing students who have just graduated from school because of the fact that it probably will not be that hard to find a job. Over the years, there has been an increase in health care jobs. The article “Neonatal Nursing: The First Six Weeks” tells us that, “There are nearly 40,000 low birth weight babies born in this country annually.” (Jones, 6) Since there are so many low birth weight babies born each year there is a high need for neonatal nurses. The nursing market will most likely continue to grow each year, which means that I should not have to worry so much about finding a job.

Another reason why I believe nursing is the best career for me is because of the salary. As I mentioned before that in order to become a neonatal nurse you must first become a registered nurse. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), “The median annual wage for registered nurses was $65,470 in May 2012.” (BLS 1) From the knowledge, I already have about neonatal nursing; I know that after a few years you can get a master’s degree to become a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP). NNPs are paid a lot more since they are the ones who help and guide the staff in the NICU. This salary would give me the chance not only to have a better life for myself but also give be stability. I could live comfortable with this income; I would not have to worry about struggling financially.

In order to become the type of the nurse I want to be, I will need to prepare for different situations in varying settings. There are two programs in City Tech, the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing and the Bachelor Science (BS) of Nursing. Both these programs will teach me many skills that I will need for my career. To obtain a seat in the first program I will have to take the TEAS exam and take pre-requisites. I will be taking the exam next semester. When I spoke to an advisor, she told me, “It’s best to start studying now and start taking practice exams.” (Nyguen) There are limited seats in the program, so it is important I try my very best. Once I am in the program, I will then start taking nursing courses. Some classes that I will be taking are Medication Calculations, Caring for Clients with Common Alterations in Survival Needs, and many more classes resulting in 36 credits. After I earn my AAS in nursing, I can then continue my education in nursing at City tech in the BS program. According to City Tech’s Catalog, the BS of Nursing program will teach me how to apply reasoning and various skills in a nursing environment.

With my preparation at City Tech, I hope to continue my education in receiving a master’s degree in a different school. From all the research I have attained, I can say that nursing is something you must be truly dedicated to. You will have to put most of your time, if not all, and effort in order to do well and succeed. I would recommend doing internships in either a hospital or a clinic; this will enhance your knowledge in nursing and will be a step forward in becoming a nurse. It is also very important to maintain a high GPA because the nursing programs are very competitive and you would not want to risk the chance of being kicked out. Although nursing might seem hard, if it is something you want to pursue never be discouraged that you cannot achieve this goal.

Future Goal

My name is Rebecca Anansa Moore.  I am a freshman at New York City of Technology College.  I am currently majoring in liberal arts, but I am planning to change my major to nursing.  I want to become a psychiatric RN.   This is the best career for me, because I love giving people advice, it would be a job I like to do, and the salary would be appropriate for me to take care of myself.  In this essay, I will do these things in this order: provide a background about my career and its context, supporting evidence for my thesis statement, the preparation for my career, a conclusion, and finally a list of cited.

According to New York City College of Technology, (City Tech) Catalog 2014-2015, it stated that, it is going to prepare me “to become members of the health team in health service agencies, clinics, community and long term care agencies and hospitals. It also stated that “The nursing program at New York City College of Technology bases its curriculum on Watson’s philosophy and theory of human caring in nursing.” The program teaches “students to care for clients by providing a supportive, protective and/or corrective environment, with attention to the client’s physical, emotional, socio-cultural and spiritual condition.”(City tech 1)  The catalog 2014-2015 shows the classes that I should take and how my grades should be; it also teaches how I should treat my patients.

I want to be a psychiatric RN, that’s why I chose the article “Issues influencing psychiatric nurse retention during the first year of employment: a case analysis” which gives me a sense of the job I want to do in the future. It stated that “retention of nurses in the work force is a universal concern. But the recruitment and retention of nurses in psychiatric care settings is particularly difficult given the complexities and challenges of mental health care.” (Page 49) I like a little challenge when working with people, it helps me know them more and study how they are, just how a psychiatric nurse do.

Now that I gave you a little background information about my career, I am now going to expand on my reasons for why my career is the best job for me. First reason I said my career is the best job for me is, because I love giving people advice, I’m really good at giving people advice. People will always come to me for advice about anything, and the advice I give helps them.  In the a book Critical care nursing it says that psychiatric nurses “teach patients families about the patient’s condition, and how to reach in certain scenarios and how to deal with challenges that go along with psychiatric disorders.” This relates to what I do when people tell me their problems, and what I do to help them.

My second reason it will be a job I will enjoy doing. This career has the things I like doing when I help people. This is a job that will make me happy not miserable. It will be a job I look forward to every day. I want to make people lives better and make a change in it. In the Book Professional Nursing supports my reason; it stated that “a career in psychiatric nursing provides an opportunity for compassionate people to make a significant difference in the lives of those who suffer from mental illness. The care that these professionals provide helps patients ward off disability, poverty, social isolation and other complications associated with these conditions. In many cases, psychiatric nurses see their patients recover enough to return to their homes, jobs, families, and the comforts to their everyday lives.”

The third reason this career is the best choice for me is, because the amount of money I will get paid. According to “Bureau of Labor Statics” psychiatric RN gets paid $65, 470 per year and makes $31.48 per hour.” That’s in 2012, in 2014 it went up, but I couldn’t really find information about their 2014 salary. That’s a reasonable amount of money for me. I could afford all the things I want in life, the things I need to pay for, and not worry about having a bad job that don’t give me enough money.  In life you have to have a good job and make a lot of money to survive and be happy.

City tech will help prepare for my career because of the classes and information giving to me for my major.  Two classes that I am taking from liberal arts are needed for the nursing program so I am still on target.  I find that really helpful, the liberal arts program offers some nursing classes.   Since many students do not know what to major in, the liberal arts program helps you to decide your mind with the different classes offered.  Like I stated before in my second paragraph the 2014 and 2015 career catalog “prepares students to become members of the health team in health services agencies, clinics, community and long term care agencies and hospitals.” When I look around the nursing department, I saw a room that looked just like a hospital with dummy dolls.  I find that really helpful, because they are preparing you and making you practice on dolls in a hospital setting, so you can have an experience about what nurses do in a hospital.

To learn more about my major and what I have to do to be a nurse, I did a email interview to Professor Garofalo.  I asked her questions about the nursing TEAS exam and the Nclex exams. One of the questions I asked was “In order for me to be a nurse do I have to pass the Nclex exam first in order for me to get a job?  Do you take the Nclex exam after your associate degree?” Professor Garofalo responded saying “after you complete and pass a nursing program, either an AAS or a BS program you are eligible to take the NCLEX exam. You will not be able to get a job as a registered nurse without passing the Nclex and then obtaining a NY license.” As you can see those two exams are very important in the nursing field. I need to take the TEAS exam in order to get into the nursing program and I need to take the Nclex exam to become a license nurse. Those two exams are hard but I know I can do it.

In conclusion I cannot wait to get in the nursing program at city tech.  I know this field is hard and tiring, but if I want something in life, I’m going to get it.  I’m happy that the nursing field has so much variety.  Now I can mix psychology and nursing together and be a psychiatric nurse instead of a psychiatrist.  The recommendations I can make for others who are interested in my field is to talk to someone who works within the program or even a student within the program that can share their experience and prepare you for what you may be looking forward to in the program.   Do a lot of research on the school website about the program. Also always check the nursing department Bulletin board, it has a lot of information and tells you when you should send your application. Since nursing has so much variety it’s a very competitive field, because you can get a job quicker in that field. If you really want to work in the nursing field and want to major in nursing you have to be very dedicated and serious, because the nursing department has only limited amount of seats in the nursing program. Don’t waste your money and time.

As a freshman here at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) I was given many options on what careers to follow. Choosing a career wasn’t as simple as I thought it would be. As I got older I realized there were so many things to take into consideration when choosing a career, for example how many years I will be in school for, what will I be required to do? Or if I will be capable of handling the amount of work this field asks for.  I’ve been reflecting deeply into this thought and came to a conclusion that Fashion Marketing is the best career path for me because this career has to do with one of my passions, Fashion. Another reason would be the income. I will be making enough money to live comfortably on my own. Lastly I have also noticed I reside in Brooklyn, which is close to Manhattan, this also means I am close to a large selection of clothing stores and businesses. This will give me a greater advantage of obtaining a job in this field. In this essay I will be including some background information about fashion marketing, followed by the three reasons on why I chose fashion marketing as a career, and also how City Tech will prepare me for this career.

The paragraph I will be writing has to do with my major Fashion Marketing and some background information about it. The New York City College of Technology course catalog 2014-2015, gave me a lot of useful information on what this major consists of. I was able to see the credits, including the name of each class I will be taking. “Through the core curriculum the student gains insight into many subjects that help to explain sociological and psychological factors which influence fashion interest and demand in today’s global market.”(City Tech, 126)  This first sentence in the catalog is what marketing is about, finding factors that influence or interest today’s society. Since fashion and marketing are constantly changing there is always something new to discover or learn within society and what is more interesting is that you get to apply these findings to marketing. Ever wonder how clothing stores stay in business? Fashion marketing plays a big role in clothing industries; they are in charge of finding the latest trends and customer behaviors to keep their business updated.

Ever since I was little drawing would always keep my mind entertained, taking me into an alternate world full of clothes, fashion, and models. There wasn’t anything more I loved doing than attempting to draw these models wearing unique clothing. People always say “Do what you love” and this exactly why I chose this career. My marketing class for this semester has taught me various things going deeply into what marketing is really about. “Understanding how trends behave and reflect cultural shifts will help identify the signs and signals for areas of influence on the horizon” (Jacobs, 4), this line on the Identifying Geographic Drivers for Discovery article, caught my attention because it talks about fashion expanding and in order to succeed you will need to understand society, their behaviors, trends, and much more.  To understand and obtain more knowledge of the fashion industry and their influences you will need to learn the foundations of marketing fashion. I really enjoy these classes and wish to continue learning more about marketing.

Another major reason for continuing in this career is because of the annual salary. What I will be receiving is enough for me to be able to live on my own comfortably, which is something I look forward to.  According an article by Chron about Fashion marketing, “In the northeast region, they earned between $55,000 and $74,000 per year, with lows in Pennsylvania and highs in New York” (Suttle, 1). Considering the fact that I live in New York where they pay is higher, this benefits me in many ways. I won’t have to travel far to find this job, and I will also be close to my family members. There are many other things I want to accomplish, like being independent and having my own fashion blog. With this pay I will be able to go shop for clothes more often and maybe get ideas will doing so.

Manhattan is known as the city that never sleeps because of the bright lights and the various amount of stores available. You can find almost any clothing store there, even discover new ones. The amount of stores made me realize that there will also be positions open for fashion marketing jobs. “Now, international brands in need of recognition are flocking to locations in the heart of the prime area, Madison Avenue between 60th and 64th Streets” (Edelson, 1) While reading an article this line made think on how many people dream to open a store in Manhattan, it is one of the busiest places in New York and of course the amount of stores that already exist. As for me, my dream is to work for one of these brand clothing stores. Considering the fact that live in Brooklyn and Manhattan is only thirty minutes away from where I live works out great. I will be living somewhere affordable and work in the city.

City Tech has done a great job with organization. They offer services like faculty counseling to guide students in their career choice, tutoring, programs, and an online catalog, making it easier for students to find what classes they need to take and a detailed summary about this major. All these methods help students see what classes are required in their major. These classes are specifically made to teach students and prepare them in their career choice. I had a chance to interview my professor for my Principles of selling class, about the importance of a degree and he told me this, “Without a degree you won’t be able to set foot through the door, every job now requires some type of degree. This is a completive market.”  With City Tech’s programs they are giving students a greater change at success by preparing them for their future job career, and also assisting students with any question they might have.

Although there are many things to consider while choosing a career, I think the most important thing to do is look for something that interests you or something close to your hobbies. For instance, I love to draw but at the same time I love to discover new things. While searching through the different branches and industries in fashion, I came across Fashion Marketing. Something I never heard about before but from this brief summary I wanted to know more. This career included both of my interests, drawing, and discovering. I deeply encourage everyone to search deeply and think of all the benefits when choosing a career; this is something that will impact your future in greatly. Also anyone that is seeking a career in Fashion Marketing I strongly advise them to do a research like this, which can always come in handy. Overall I am having great time learning about marketing, my professor is great and I can’t wait till next semester to start learning about fashion. Like Stait says in his article “Future success depends a great deal on its ability to forecast and deal with the increasing speed of fashion change” (N.H, 1), future success will come with hard and dedication. This career can be challenging but with City Tech’s preparation many things can be accomplished.

Being in a world where medicine is crucial for our survival, becoming a nurse is something I want to do. I am a student at City Tech and I am hoping to pursue a career as a nurse. My motive behind choosing nursing is to learn more about the medical field. Me choosing this career is the wisest decision I have made. The benefits of me becoming a nurse is I that will have a stable job, good salary and most importantly helping others. Preparation is key in the field of nursing and in this essay I will be talking about what it takes to make into a nursing career. Not only that, I will be talking about why I choose my major, with supporting details on why I want to  pursue this major.

The College Catalog 2014 – 2015 give an introduction to the Nursing. The 2014 – 2015  college catalog tells us  about the courses ” Required Core, Flexible Core, College Option Requirement, Associate level Course and Baccalaureate- Level Course” (Pg.180). The nursing program outcome will be to  “Utilize the caring model to safely meet the health needs of clients of all ages in a variety of settings” (Pg.175). This program will teach me to continue lifelong learning activities and professional development. I will get out of this program with a “Function as a client advocate in the healthcare system” (Pg.176). The catalog also tells me that I can’t slack off. I need to be on top of the game. According to this catalog ” To qualify for admission overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale” (Pg.179). The topic of the article I chose is “A patient’s- Eye- View of Nurses” to get a sense of what patients think about Nurses. This article talks about the amount of trouble that patients would be facing without nurses. This article says, “Had never before understood how much good nursing care contributes to patients’ safety and comfort, especially when they are very sick or disabled” (Lawrence 2). This example clearly shows that when the person got sick only then they understand the contribution of nurses. “What personal care hospitalized patients now get is mostly from nurses. When nursing is not optimal, patient care is never good” (4). It clearly describes the importance of nurses. The example above shows that without the nurses patient care wouldn’t be good. It is very important to have nurses in order to give people good care. This article says, “Nurses’ observations and suggestions have saved many doctors from making fatal mistakes in caring for patients” (4). This example clearly shows how much nurses help the doctors and without the nurses doctors wouldn’t be that successful. According to this article you get a sense of that nurses job is not only to take care of patients but to give their best and without nurses the amount of care patients get would never be possible.

Now that I’ve discussed the background information about nursing, I will say why it is the right career for me. I believe it is important to be happy with the job you choose no matter what your major is. I chose the article “ Concept analysis and job satisfaction in nursing” to read and learn about satisfaction rates in a nursing career. The article acknowledges me of, “Job satisfaction influences productivity, performance, absenteeism, retention, recruitment, organizational commitment, patient satisfaction, and patient care” (Gustavo 130). This clearly is an example of how job satisfaction plays a huge rule not only for our whole life career but also in our lives. Not being happy with our job can lead to negative effects ,such as, “Poor motivation, stress, absenteeism and high labor turnover” (130). The example describe how important it  is to be satisfied with your job. The article also states “Job satisfaction now exists in health care” (132). This article confirms that there is job satisfaction in nursing and that confirms that I won’t be in a stressful job. Thus, these examples show how much job satisfaction matters in our lives.

The reason why I chose nursing is because, I want to help people. After helping someone the feeling you get is amazing and can’t be described. I love when you can help the needy and be the reason of their smile. Nursing is a place where you can be useful for other people. The article I chose is “Nurses, Addicted to Helping People” By Abigail Zuger, M.D. This article talks about different experiences of people and how brightening up other people’s  day was actually the biggest happiness of their life. “For twelve years I took care of children who would never get better. People ask how I could do it, but it was the most fulfilling job of my life. We couldn’t cure these kids, but we could give them a better hour or even a better minute of life. All we wanted to do was make their day a little brighter”(Zuger 3) This example tells us that in Nursing you get to help other’s and by being useful it gives you happiness. In this article John Barbe, a hospice nurse in Florida says, “I love what I do; I can’t stay away from this place” (4). It tells that Nursing is very addicting and when you get a habit of helping others it gives you a peace and you can’t let go of it.

Making a good amount of money is very important in every job. The reason why I chose Nursing is because of the amount of money I will be making as a Nurse. In the U.S. News and World Report it tells about the salary of Nurses. The reports says, “The median salary for a registered nurse was $65,470 in 2012” (1). The amount of money report tells us that is pretty good. After 2012, the salary of nurses has been increasing.The report also says that every nurse makes different amount of money. According to the report, “RNs made more than $94,720, while the bottom 10 percent earned less than $45,040” (1). This example give us a sense of that every nurse makes different amount. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics “Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations” (1). This example shows that the nurses will be in demand which shows that I won’t have to worry about not getting a job or losing the job.

I have discussed about all the reasons of why I chose Nursing for my future studies, now I will discuss what can I do to prepare for the career. To be prepared for nursing, it is very important to have good grades and be on top of the game. I need to fulfill all the requirements with a 3.5 GPA. The most important thing is to do internships which is related to your career. This way you can get a sense of what you will be expected to do in the future. It is very important to have an idea of what you will have to do in your career later on and how to do it. I interviewed Professor Garofalo and he told me some important things for the Nursing program. “All nursing classes must be taken to be eligible to sit for the national exam (NCLEX)” (Garofolo). She also told me “City Tech is a member of CUNY and does accept most credits from other colleges”(Garofolo).

Nursing is a very good choice for my major. Nursing pays good amount of money, you get to help people and there is job satisfaction. I chose Nursing because of these reason. Medical field is very competitive but it gives us the job stability while helping others. I always wanted to help others and without nurses patients will never have the amount of good care they have. I believe I made the right decision by choosing nursing as my major.Nursing will make me a better person as well because helping people will give me good signals within. Nursing is a job where I will get all the things a person wants in their job.

My name is Samantha Yu and I’m a second year student at New York City College of Technology majoring in Art and Advertising/ Communication Design. In the future, my plan is to be in the advertising field promoting new products that can influence a variety of people. This is the best career for me because I enjoy designing and designing allows me to be innovative, sophisticated, and impactful to the society.

Entering one of the most competitive fields in the world, advertising gives me the opportunity to give my designs a shot during my studies and in reality. Entering New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) for their technology and design as a Communication Design major can help me accomplish my goals. From the 2013-2014 NYCCT College Catalog, it states that, “The advertising AAS degree program provides students with a solid foundation in theory and current practices of the advertising design industry.” (NYCCT College Catalog, 189-190) After my studies at NYCCT, I am hoping to get jobs as a freelance at first, for starters, and then work my way up to being a head designer or even opening up my own agency. In Rebecca Vander Meulen’s, What Can You Do With an Arts Major? she states, “According to the nonprofit organization Americans for the Arts, the arts and culture industry creates about 5.7 million full-time jobs every year, nationwide…art students go into fields like book design, advertising, art law, and medical illustration…art majors possess skills business leaders need: creativity and the ability to communicate.” (Meulen, 22) In this essay, I will further explain my reasons for pursuing a career in this field.

“Foundation Class Drawings” (Yu, Foundation Class Drawings)

One of my biggest passions while growing up was drawing because I like to be innovative. I would always randomly doodle on things or use my skills to develop cards and presentations. During my academic life in public schools, I never had the chance to take any art classes because there weren’t any art classes offered. As I entered NYCCT, I finally get the chance to take art courses as a Communication Design major. Along the way, I realized that entering the advertising field is the only way for me to pursue an art and design future. According to the 2013-2014 NYCCT College Catalog, “Students are offered a broad range of foundation courses- from figure drawing, design and color, typography, photography, and design studio procedures to advanced courses including digital media, video, animation, graphic design, advertising, illustration, web design, packaging design, and an advertising design internship.” (NYCCT College Catalog, 189-190) As I noticed this, I realized that this major is the major that I am going to go with. It states that there will be drawing classes, design studios, and photography, and all of these are things that I am interested in. I like designing and drawing because I have a big imagination. My imagination allows me to create and develop my own unique designs that differ from everyone else’s. According to Graphic Knowledge: Albrecht Dürer and the Imagination by Peter Parshall, “Painting calls for imagination, and skill of hand, in order to discover things not seen, hiding themselves under the shadow of natural objects, and to fix them with the hand, presenting to plain sight what does not really exist. The painter is given freedom to compose a figure, standing, seated, half-man, half horse, as he pleases, according to his imagination.” (Parshall, 396) I think this quote is stating that even though imagination is not something that can be seen, it is something that works behind the scene of every person to make a good piece. Being innovative and imaginative is the first step to bringing me closer to my career goals because in the field of advertising, these are the most important elements.

“Graphic Designing With Indesign and Illustrator” (Yu, Graphic Designing With Indesign and Illustrator) 

Designing helps me be more sophisticated in the advertising field because it brings challenges to myself. I can develop new ideas and I want my ideas to be shown to the world rather than it remaining in my head. This field is not only just about drawing and designs though. It also involves knowledge of business, presentation, and sophistication. Even with a good design, a designer needs to know how to show sophistication and professionally present their ideas to their customers. According to A Day in the Life of the New Design Student, Shareen Pathak mentions, “…schools are increasingly combining design thinking (which focuses on user experience through anthropological research) with more traditional business programs. Design thinking is integral to solving business problems.”(Pathak, par.5,12) From these two statements taken from the article, it proves that designing is helpful to even business students. Even MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree students should have a MA(Master of Art) degree to better display professional ideas. As a result, being a design student isn’t only beneficial to me and my presentations, but also to people in the business field.

Advertising means reality and reality means being impactful to the society or else you will be neglected and thrown aside. Every original idea that I would have to come up with in my future career will have to leave an impression to audiences. As an artist and designer, I would want my work to impact people whether it is positively or negatively. Kim Berman, author of Imagination and Agency seems to agree with what I think too. “Artists often sit on the margins of society; that gives us the opportunity to change its shape and to draw new outlines. Our ability to imagine, to visualize, to innovate, to put together things that don’t naturally belong together, permits us to collaborate effectively with others who are working for positive change in society.”(Berman, 3) Not only do we as artists want to change society, but we aid others into doing so too.

My education at New York City College of Technology prepares me for my future career in the advertising field. In my opinion, before any impactful advertisements are produced, I must take the proper courses first. This semester, I have a couple of very knowledgeable professors, but there was on that really influenced me. To pursue a career in this field, one would need to take Graphic Principle courses because this course teaches people how to visually look at things. I am currently taking the first part of it and we learn how to perfectly make a piece of art fit on a page according to perspective, proportions, colors, and contrast. This is significant to my future career because these things are needed to create a good advertisement. I found this course most useful, so I had an interview with my Graphic Principles professor, Stella Nicolaou, through email, about this field. “I had a great and privileged education, studied with well-known creative people in the field. They passed a wealth of information to me. Over the years, I have developed much curriculum to help students, published and displayed work, made numerous public lectures, work written up in the media, etc. Like any field one has passion for, it is important to always work on being your best. You also need to keep up with technology; software is always changing and the vehicle for communications. One also needs to be patient and persistent when seeking opportunities. Opportunities will come but not specifically when one expects them.”(Nicolaou, par.4,6-7) Like Professor Nicolaou, I would also like to be privileged with a great education, have numerous works displayed and published, and influence many people. So in order to pursue a career in the advertisement field, education is significant and a good impactful impression should be left with your audience and society.

Pursuing a career in the advertising field is not an easy thing. It is one of the most competitive fields in the world and there are many agencies. With just a passion of designing and drawing it is not enough to get into this field. In order to get a career in this field, one must be convincing, educated, imaginative, and influential. With these important elements, opportunities are more likely to come your way. Like Professor Nicolaou mentions, “One also needs to be patient and persistent when seeking opportunities. Opportunities will come but not specifically when one expects them.”(Nicolaou, par. 6-7)

Using your brain to explore a career path                     

                                    The story behind my hospitality

            My name is Daryn-Amel, I’m eight-teen years old, a freshmen at City Tech college, and I’m a Hospitality major. I am a Hospitality major at City Tech college because I am interested in cooking, tourism, and pastry art.

            The Hospitality major is a very broad umbrella with many different types of career fields under its name. Although the Hospitality major has culinary arts, pastry arts, tourism, and restaurant management all under it’s umbrella, I am specifically interested in being a professional culinary chef.

            The Hospitality major and being a professional chef is the best career path for me because growing up, I moved around a lot from town to town with my family, although I would always be somewhere foreign feeling lost, I always had my mom’s favorite Latin recipes as long as a grocery store was in sight. Cooking always made me feel at home or in a sense of security since it was the only sense of stability I had with my family for a while. My family and I had to move around a lot due to economic reasons up until my mom and dad’s careers were established. According to the ‘ Bureau of labor statistic’s’, people in the Hospitality major start off making a salary in the field of roughly $ 50,000 a year. In my opinion $50,000 is a decent amount of money because there has been times in my life where my dad was only making below $50,000 a year while providing for three kids, still always managing to make ends meet.

            Since I was always the ‘ new kid’ on the block in every neighborhood or school I attended growing up due to my families economic standing at the previous time, I learned after attending a new school’s multi-cultural food festival that while most of the other kid’s parents were buying catering platters instead of home-cooked meals for the festival, my mom and I were the only ones in my class whose own personal labor went into cooking a special Enchilada recipe. All my classmates ranted and raved on and on about how delicious my mom’s Enchilada recipe was. Since my cooking ability was very good I learned since that day in elementary school, this is why I want to take courses in my major like ‘ HMGT 49-65 International cuisine’, to learn more about international cuisine’s. As stated in the college’s Hospitality catalog on pages ‘ 49-65’ on the City Tech website under 2014-2015 college catalog, it says ‘ students will learn more about in depth international delicacy and the regional ingredients behind it used to create these recipes’.

            Another reason I want to become a professional chef is because I want to be able one day to do some sort of charitable campaign for ‘ Feed the Children’ organization by using my culinary talents in the future after I graduate City Tech with a ‘ Bachelor of Technology in Hospitality Management’ diploma in the next four years.

            According to the City Tech college catalog on the City Tech website, the Hospitality catalog says that students taking courses in this field will take a broad range of classes including ‘HMGT 1203, culinary arts one; HMGT 1204 baking and pastry arts one; HMGT 4952 hospitality and tourism enterprise development’. All of these courses are broad ranges of learning aspects needed to acquire a diploma in the ‘ Bachelor of technology in hospitality management’.

            Since I want to become a professional culinary chef, I must take all my major’s culinary classes seriously, whole-heartedly, open minded, and attentive to acquire the information I will study because with cooking there must be a lot of note taking, listening, and observation. In hospitality major we will learn a broad range of diverse curriculum, but since I’m a cooking apprentice I will mainly focus on culinary arts rather than the other curriculum dealing with tourism, restaurant management, and lodging management.

            ‘ The Walt Disney World college program’ is a dream of all hospitality major’s, but will only become ‘ dream come true’ for some selected few hospitality students. Every year the ‘ Walt Disney World college program’ selects a few City Tech students to become culinary apprentices at their Orlando, Florida theme park. I’m hoping while attending City Tech college, that one year I’ll be selected to be a culinary apprentice at their Orlando, Florida based theme park. It would be a ‘ dream come true’, if I ever was selected to become a culinary apprentice at Disney World.

            Carlos Cole a student here at City Tech college, is a hospitality major who is also a coordinator for many hospitality events here at the college. Carlos Cole is a hospitality major mentor who also happened to attend the ‘ Walt Disney World college program’ to be a cooking apprentice, hotel lodging assistant, and amusement park ride coordinator. I interviewed Carlos with questions regarding the hospitality major.

            I asked Carlos ‘ what made you pursue the hospitality major here at City Tech College ?’, he replied ‘ my parents and grandparents are all alumni’s that graduated from City Tech and have or had good careers because of it, so it was only natural for me to attend, besides its close to my house’. I then asked Carlos ‘ what made you want to major in hospitality’, he then responded ‘ I always loved food and travel, so when I found out they actually had a productive major regarding food and travel my favorite things in life, I felt maybe this would be a good choice for me to consider being apart of’. I personally can agree with Mr. Cole’s answer to question number two. I then asked Carlos ‘ how did you enjoy the Walt Disney World college program, like the experience of it ?’, he then responded ‘ I loved it, every moment, it was an amazing experience that didn’t even feel like work, it was fun, not a burden at all, and I really didn’t want to come back home to Brooklyn after’, he then started laughing. I could only personally imagine that the Disney World college program must have been as amazing as Mr. Cole says it was.

            Although I know everything I must get done while attending City Tech college to reach my dream of being a professional chef, I can not pass every course field of curriculum without confidence, communication skills, and having a sense of a whole hearted open mind. Since I want to reach my dream of being a professional chef through City Tech college without giving up when facing obstacles, I must recognize my faults in the skill of good communication. I will be attending a ‘ Effective Speaking ( SPE 1330 )’ course during the spring semester here at the college so I can fix my fault of mumbling while speaking. This course is listed on the City Tech website’s college catalog.

            My advice for other City Tech perspective or possible students is that if they are interested in culinary arts, pastry arts, management, and tourism then that Hospitality major is definitely for them. In my opinion City Tech’s hospitality management field is a great sector with good faculty teaching, supervising, and mentoring the people in the major. I would definitely recommend people interested in the Hospitality major’s field to attend City Tech to do so.
