Community Service

During my fourth semester in the Dental Hygiene Program, four of my classmates and I did a community project “Educating New Parents about Oral Health for Newborns”. We gave back to the community by doing this project.

The purpose of the project was to educate parents on how to maintain the oral hygiene on their newborns, in order to prevent complications such as early childhood caries (EEC).

My role in this project was to give a review to the parents on the key points of the presentation, and to give home care instructions. Parents should start brushing their babies teeth as soon as they erupt into the oral cavity. They should brush at night and during another time of the day. They should brush the babies teeth with a fluoride toothpaste, and don’t rinse the toothpaste away. They should not allow the baby to sleep with a bottle of milk in the mouth.  And other, instructions that are key in the prevention of caries.
