The Durian banana ice cream

durian icecream

It was my first time trying it.  It has a onion like taste and some kind of a root vegetable taste. The sweetness of the banana saved it by a little.  It was a interesting experience but if i would eat it with more bites i would probably enjoy it more.  The initial bite was a turn down because I do not like durian and I never tried durian.

Durian Banana Ice Cream

So as you all know we visited the Lower East Side Last Week and one of the stops were Morganstern’s Ice Cream. One of the flavors we tried that was unusual was the Durian Banana Ice Cream simply because it had a unique flavor. While everyone seemed to have hated the taste of it, i feel that i was not that bad once you get past the first initial taste which some of you referred to as “onion”. Once you put the ice cream in your mouth, you get hit with a slight onion/scallion taste which was more of a leek flavor. The banana sweetness balanced it out very well and complemented it. Once that taste of leeks died down, the banana helps cool and sweeten out the pallet. I had never tried or heard of Durian before so it was in experience in and of itself. The taste of the ice cream as well as the fruit is more of an acquired taste, you either like it or you don’t, but i just love trying new things. i just happened to like what i tried this time.

Spicy Pork Intestines

When I was in California, I had tasted intestines for the first time ever and I thoroughly enjoyed them very much. I normally can not take spicy foods but this one was so delicious I kept going back for more bites as my mouth was burning up and I sipped water every few seconds. The taste was truly real and is brought all the way from the Szechaun region of China.

This dish is spicy pork and beef intestines with Sichuan peppercorns, toasted sesame, and chili. Delicious spiciness. It was full of texture and flavor. The intestines were fried well with a nice crunch. Its crispy deep-fried exterior went well with a crunch to the meltingly pork inside. The flavor is quite delicate but also had heat to spice it up. Together with the sauce and chilis, it becomes sort of a gelatinous all combined, which many Chinese people like.

These days, real food does not taste like real food as it is said to be. It is unlikely to taste real Chinese food such as soup dumplings from Shanghai or ma po tofu. These tastes are just too accustomed to American people’s likings.

Rock Shrimp

The other day I went to a Japanese restaurant for my friends birthday. As you all may know I dont eat seafood, but….. She made me try the rock shrimp. It was delicious! The way it was fried, and glazed all worked together so well. I will definitely try it again in different restaurants.

Mantis Shrimp

I have actually never even seen a mantis shrimp before and there it was in front me of me while I was at a friend’s house. The mantis shrimp is quite large, long and strange. These creatures are boiled whole and eaten out of the shell. I really liked the taste and texture of this shrimp. It was sweet and more tender than a lobster. It is a real delicacy to me and I would like to buy this shrimp and cook it myself.

I would like to try this creature with garlic sauce. I would even put it in a paella.

Coco Reef Dinner

Coconut Bay, Bon Accord Village, Trinidad & Tobago Phone: www.cocoreef.com

I  am not  a wine person, but my  friend  and i decided to order wine at dinner. It  was  Trapiche Wine Moscato, i like it very much. Because it was sweet  wine and not  dry  one, i  enjoyed  drinking a few glasses . I might be wrong  but I believe  that it has  medium body. It’s aromas was like herbs and a fruity smelt, it  was  smooth on  the  palate.

Sunday School Event Tobago

Sunday School is a weekly outdoor party in Buccoo Tobago the event is to  attraction for tourists. it’s  en-tales the  playing of  the  national  instrument of Trinidad and Tobago which is  the  steel pan. It l start from 6:00 p.m. to 12 midnight.  Also has an  after party  which the locals continue to party from 12 midnight until 4:00 a.m. it’s was  my  first  time  going  to  event and  it  was  great experience.
The local street vendors prepared meals, the is  great. I don’t find that the meals are expensive, however tourists  pays  more  for  their food. I payed  $60  for  Vegetable rice, Coleslaw, Lentil peas, Pakcoy , Potato salad, Macaroni pie and Cavali fish grilled with BBQ sauce.  I was given sample  taste  upon  placing  my  order  and  find  that  the  fish  was  tough because  he  over  cooked it  and  maybe because  it  was  left out on the grilled.  I’ve never eaten Cavali fish before time,  when  i got  it  i was not  over cooked  soft,  it  was  well seasoned, it just  melt  away  in your  month, it  was  silky smooth to go down and  it tasted  great.

Sweet pork buns

Tuesday afternoon I went to a dumpling place near our school (Golden Fried Dumpling) and ordered my usual pork and chive dumplings, and decided to try something new so I got the sweet pork bun. When I got home after the train ride I bit into it and it was probably one of the most delicious things I’ve eaten. The surrounding dough was sweet, and the middle was warm and savory which made the combination of the two incredible. The pork seemed to have been cooked for hours because it melted in my mouth when I took a bite. Needless to say I will definitely be going back.

Chicken Satay

Last night my fiancée and I went to a Thai restaurant, and for the first time I tried chicken satay. Although it just looks like grilled chicken on a stick, it was seasoned with turmeric and curry powder. To accompany it was a side of peanut sauce and a citrus vinaigrette. The chicken was grilled perfect and was still juicy inside, and the seasonings gave you just enough kick. The onlyr thing I was not too fond of was the peanut sauce which tasted just like peanut butter and was too thick.

Durian Fritters

Went for dim sum at the Golden Unicorn today and, in following up the durian-banana ice cream I tasted at Morgensterns, I ordered what turned out to be a durian20141102_141243filled fried pastry.  And now I can definitively say, I don’t like durian.  The texture of the pastries was terrific, a delicate, crispy exterior and a luscious creamy interior but the flavor?  To me it tasted like vanilla custard scented with rotting onions.  And some people apparently like this stuff.
