Law Office

A law office I would like to work is UnLocal. UnLocal is a community-centered non-profit organization that provides direct immigration legal representation and community education to New York City’s undocumented immigrant communities. According to goggle  its mission is to address the fundamental injustices and structural inequities that disproportionately impact our communities. Their main goal is create a sustainable structures that build collective power and allow us to flourish.

Law Office

The law office that I would eventually like to work at is The Blanch Law Firm. It is a private law firm that specializes in criminal defense, which is what I would like to do. It’s located at 261 Madison Ave floor 12, New York NY, 10016. The team here is very diverse being that they have lawyers from all different backgrounds of the justice system, but the main focus is criminal defense. According to their website the firm has three divisions, white collar crime, professionals and high profile individuals, and blue and grey collar division. Id like to work here because I think they have a wide variety of cases they take and they think of their work so highly.

Where I want to work

A law office in NYC where I might like to work would be Pryor Cashman LLP. The NYC office address is 7 Times Square 40th Floor New York, NY, 10036. I would like to work at this law office because as I researched it, I came across reviews saying that while the firm hires people who are “smart, hard-working, personable, and resourceful” they also use a person’s personality to judge whether or not they may get hired. The review also said that the firm culture was “liberal, mostly laid back, and flexible” Out of all the firms I looked into this really stood out to me because if they use personality as a category for hiring and the firm culture is described as “liberal and laid back” then I feel like I may fit right in. The firm was founded as an entertainment law boutique firm. I believe they do various kinds of work because on the website I see that they have categories for different kinds of law. However, if I was to work there, I would go into family law.

I chose New York County Defender Services because I believe the services offered are more genuine, meaning that even if a potential client can’t afford representation a lawyer will still be awarded. For example, these are some of the services offered free immigration assistance, information on how to locate a loved one who was recently arrested, and information on almost any legal issue someone may be facing which can be found in the “community service” tab on their website. I also checked the job postings and at the moment they’re not hiring but on their website in the “what we do” tab it states that they do employ Paralegals. In conclusion, I believe this is a legal services organization based on their services.

EXTRA CREDIT! Write about today’s trip!

Hello Students!

I hope you enjoyed today’s tour of the Manhattan courts, ESPECIALLY our experience at the US District Court for the Southern District of NY!  If you’d like to write a post about the experience, that would be fantastic!  You can earn two extra points on the upcoming midterm exam.  You’re welcome to write about anything at all: what you particularly enjoyed, or what you found especially interesting or surprising, or how the experience affected your view of the courts, or your career plans, or our visit to the African Burial Ground Monument, or anything else!  Just fyi, these are the names of the individuals we met: US Marshal Joe Zayas; Judge Debra Freeman (for whom I clerked), Judge Gabriel Gorenstein (presided over the proceeding), Lance Smith (defense counsel, City Tech Law & Paralegal Studies graduate), and Andrew Davis (Assistant U.S. Attorney, the prosecutor).  Choose “extra credit!” as the category for your post.

Don’t forget!  By end of today (Thurs. Sept. 30), please post your “Law in Culture review” source here on OL, see the assignment for required information.  For Tues. Oct. 5, for 1101 Intro, please read M&M ch. 2 pp. 38-43 (on BB) and write a post about a law office where you might like to work as described in this assignment.  For 1103 Civ Pro, please bring your copy of the CPLR and read C&W ch. 5 (on BB).

Enjoy the weekend, I look forward to seeing you in class Tuesday, Oct. 3, 10am!

Cheers,

Prof. C.

Law and Culture Review

The source I’m choosing to use is a TV drama series called “How to Get Away with Murder”. Which is about a lawyer, part-time professor who decided to pick a few of her students to go and work with her at her law firm. It is law-themed TV show that explores many different scenarios, reviews previous depositions, decisions and outcomes of high profile cases with the purpose of teaching and preparing law students to litigate; it also takes class action for incarcerated Black people.
