The English Department offers courses in developmental reading and writing, ESOL, and intermediate and advanced courses in literature and writing. Topics include gender and identity, humor, rhetorical analysis, writing in the workplace, creative writing, digital storytelling, cinema, and much more.
In addition, the English department houses a number of different programs. These include Developmental Reading, Developmental Writing, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and First-Year Writing.
The City Tech First-Year Writing Program is a robust, genre and rhetorical-based curriculum whose mission is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to understand and assess the writing contexts of new situations. This emphasis on being able to assess a new situation and adapt to it is consistent with the mission of the College which provides an emphasis on place-based learning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to hone one’s own capacity to learn and adapt.
The English Department also houses a program in Gender and Sexuality Studies, an interdisciplinary cluster of courses that explores issues of gender and sexuality from various perspectives. Students can take courses that focus on humanity, sexuality and sexual orientation, studies in gender identity/roles, representations of genders in literature and film, among other course themes.
The English Department also has a major in Professional and Technical Writing. More info on this major can be found on the Degrees page.
