Assignment #3

Reading all three articles has developed questions and concerns through my mind. In the first article, The Futurist Manifesto mentioned, “As I raised my body, mud-spattered and smelly, I felt the red hot poker of joy deliciously pierce my heart. A crowd of fishermen and gouty naturalists crowded terrified around this marvel. With patient and tentative care they raised high enormous grappling irons to fish up my car, like a vast shark that had run aground. It rose slowly leaving in the ditch, like scales, its heavy coachwork of good sense and its upholstery of comfort.” The area that the author lives during that time period, the area has become more urban, filling up the place with factories.

Also, the authors use metaphors, personification, and similes as if they were writing a poem and I felt I was reading one. I had to read between the lines in order to understand what they were saying. The first article reminded me of gentrification because there were lines where the author mentioned where people who live in the area weren’t pleased with the new technology that’s been developing. For example, ” Then with my face covered in good factory mud, covered with metal scratches, useless sweat, and celestial grime, amidst the complaint of staid fishermen and angry naturalists, we dictated our first will and testament to all the living men on earth.” A community wasn’t satisfied with urban areas taking over landscapes. This will have a huge impact on having animals go extinct, making rent go high, and people will migrate to another area.

The second article Who We Are was an interesting “poem.” “We didn’t create technology. We didn’t create man. But we, Artists yesterday, Constructors today…” The author mentioned past days are when we were creative but today we analyze every single detail of today’s technology. Artists were not intimated in technology because it wasn’t a huge thing till now, till you find out that you can do so much with high-tech. Now, we have to be part of the community that uses technology to keep going forward for the future.

Assignment #2

Language is the sound of the noun or verb that develops a sound-imagery in our minds. When we say a word of an object, the body language of the name summarizes its form of the noun/verb. What distinguishes a proper language from other forms of communication is that language can also be characteristic though it’s one semilogical system. For example, the word ‘kindness’ has a soft approach when you pronounce it. Pronouncing ‘loyal’ has strict and direct just like the meaning of the word.

Symbols and language are related to each other because they associate each other with its personality. Symbols are icons that have personalities that we can see unlike language is auditory. Though when you put symbols and language together they develop a visual story. In the article, Counting Sheeps: A Brief History of Written Numbers had selected a flow to interoperate an informal reading with language and icons. Especially, when the word ‘sheep’ has a light pronunciation and the symbol of the sheep has its fluffy fur, legs, and head to emphasize the heart-warming sheep.

What design can’t do what language does is see the visuals in person. This comes in where some people are visual learners and/or auditory learners. Some prefer to see designs to have a better understanding of what’s happening, for auditory they listen and visualize the design in their heads. Language and design are related to another’s today culture due to balancing visuals and audio. Combining both develop a stronger relationship with the speaker and listener because we’re experiencing a trip of ways how to use words and design (telling a story).

Assignment 1B

Both articles Graphic Design Theory and Design As Art had interesting points. The role that is designed in our lives and culture is a huge part role. It goes way back from 15000 BC till today. Each part of a design was made by choices. For example, “…He gives the right weight to each part of the project in hand, and he knows that the ultimate for, of the objects, is psychologically vital when the potential buyer sign up his mind. He, therefore, tries to give it a form as appropriate as possible to its function…” The designer will provide for the client’s needs. That’s one of the serivces that a designer needs to do.

Design is way different from other creativity because we select choices that will have an impact to the world instead of ourselves. We’re designing for clients, sometimes we have to push our ego to the side. “Can we imagine a ‘No Overtaking’ sign with a coffee and chocolate car on a violet background? Well, yes. We can imagine it for fun, but we cannot use it for a roadsign in real life.” Making these silly choices will give us a laugh but won’t make a difference in the real world. This is reality in the design industry.

Designers should able to question why this color, font, image or symbol was selected for this sign. Asking questions will develop a creative mindset to asking unsolvable theothrical questions. What designers struggle the most in today’s world is balancing of clients needs and personal references. The designers are responsible to solving problems because their roles is to provide strategies that can help the clients to reach their goal.
