ADVANCED TYPOGRAPHY

Course Description

Sensibility toward design and type is intensely explored. Exercises challenge creativity and visual aesthetics with emphasis on type. Typographical assignments are presented through themed projects. Layouts vary greatly from one-page to multiple-page problems.Exercises are geared to develop sensitivity to the integration of typography and with a variety of visual imagery. Page publication applications are used. In addition, there are advanced exercises in font management and file preparation.

Learning Outcomes

For the successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Design and execute concepts such as typographical visual hierarchies within a layout.
  • Design and execute concepts of complex typographical grids that use multiple column layouts.
  • Design and execute advanced creative typographical problems such as newsletters and book design.
  • Design multiple layout page problems and integrate creative and production components such as links, master pages, tabs, style sheets and initial caps.
  • Utilize relationships among font, point size and tracking, leading and kerning and runarounds.
