Objective: Explore the diversity of alignment to a grid structure.
Goal: Examine proportions.

To Do

    1. revise & print
    2. print
    3. comment
    4. watch

1.  revise your grid and hierarchy

Use a grid system to establish proportions, and create hierarchical order.

    1. Improve upon a previous solution or start anew
      Go to the Google Drive and download 2 files gd2_f21_Indesign 5 column grid.idml gd2_f21_Indesign 5 colGrid EXAMPLE.idml

2  Revise 2 pages with different arrangements
            • 8.5 x 11″
            • column grid
            • no margins
            • black and white — no color

2.1  Define your grid: Show (at least) 2 different alignments • asymmetrical alignments

            1. Text: Use your design influencers name and quote or Use placeholder text, (under the “Type” menu > fill in InDesign)
            2. Break text into smaller units and scale to show hierarchy

Have defined your grid? When you turn off your guides you should be able to see exactly where the grid line is located

2.2  Create at least 3 levels of hierarchy •. Need a refresher? Visual Hierarchy tips that will make you a better designer: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1mjGvjP1zWCPWB7XcchuKIk7Ajbz0OiN8

3  Enlarge one of your compositions to 11×17″

Refine this composition :
Does the increase in size mean that you can change the size of your type?

4 Print your 3,
    two 8.5 x 11″
   one 11×17″

bring them to class

If you can’t print on 11×17″ paper print the top and bottom separately on 8.5×11″ paper, then tape them together on the back

Remember:

• Make the grid structure obvious with the position of your elements.

• To define the grid, one of the edges of the type column MUST touch the grid line.   Do not center the text column in the middle of your grid!!!

• Use scale, placement, alignment, typestyle, etc to create order.

• Asymmetrical compositions.

2.  print

        1. Print both positive and negative versions of your letterform and icon (4 total)
        2. Mount them on board. (poster board or mat board)
        3. Trim to the edge of each composition
        4. Bring into the classroom

3.   comment: on 2 different students’ grid posts

Have they defined the grid? You should be able to see exactly where the grid lines are located

Have they created hierarchy?
