Course Work and Competencies

During my studies as a Human Services Major at New York City College of Technology, I have gained various amounts of skills and knowledge to become an advocate for Human Services. With the pertinent information instilled upon me I can serve the Domestic Violence Population. The chart provided below entails the coursework and competencies I have gained.

Courses Skills & Assignments
Counseling Methods- HUS-3501 During counseling methods, I was able to do role playing. While engaging in this method, I learned about the importance of the first interaction with the client. Also, we focused on meeting, greeting and accessing a client. Micro skills were introduced to me and practiced during most of the class sessions. I can now apply the micro skills when interacting with clients in the domestic violence population by showing empathy.

In the future, I hope to learn how to apply counseling theories to clients.

Human Services Internship- 4700 The process reporting assignment helped me to understand how to prepare a transcript of the conversation between the client and myself.  The information shared in the document had to be descriptive and visual so that the reader can bring the client to life. While meeting with a client I was able to apply active listening skills.
Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment-HUS-3602 My field assignment was to attend an Alcohol Anonymous (AA) meeting. I was able to get an understanding of how a group meeting worked. While attending the meeting I took notes of the interaction of the group members and how the leader of the group facilitated the meeting. I gained the knowledge of the 12 step program. If I have to refer a client to a meeting, I now have the understanding of the process.
