Antibiotic resistance illustrates the rapidity of evolution in human time. Bacteria can reproduce very rapidly (every 15-20 minutes at 37°C for E. coli) with respect to human time. Because of this, large numbers of bacterial generations may arise in a relative short amount of time.
Video from Harvard Medical School. Observe real time evolution of bacteria. New strains adapted to increased concentrations of antibiotics appear on this 2 ft by 4 ft mega plate Petri dish.
Discover different ways strains of bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and become “superbugs”. Learn about new strategies scientist are working on to fight these superbugs.
