Smoking Cessation

As smoking continues to be prevalent in current society, especially electronic cigarettes, it is imperative to be knowledgable and educate patients on the negative impacts to oral health and systemic health. I learned that there are appropriate steps to take for smoking cessation as it requires consistency and behavior change which cannot easily be done by just informing the patient. The patient must acknowledge and be willing to accept the change.

Toothbrushing & Flossing

Toothbrushing and flossing are the 2 main things that we do everyday to maintain good oral health and prevent gum disease. While writing this paper, I learned extensive information about gum disease, its impacts on oral health, and proper techniques to achieve good oral hygiene which I can apply to when teaching my patients.

While this research analysis strays a little off topic from hygiene, it amazed to me see how far the technology in dentistry has advanced! I found out that there is a possibility in the future, teeth can be regenerated… which means being able to “retain” more teeth as we age. This can give people a second chance to learn how to better take care of their teeth so they would not have to go through the whole process of regeneration again.

Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren’s Syndrome is a common autoimmune disease in older people, especially women, and it can affect the oral cavity greatly. There is less production in saliva, which can lead to oral manifestations like candidiasis, xerostomia, greater risk in caries and periodontal disease. When seeing patients with this syndrome or a decrease salivary flow, I now know how to better manage and care for them.
