This was our first project in my graphic design class. The point of it was to use the positive space to activate the negative space in a cool and personalized way. We learned how to cut shapes out with an exacto knife and paste them on to a page using glue. Placing well crafted shapes in creative places opens up the art and creates complimenting negative space. I found out by doing this project that I am terrible with an ink open and simplicity is key in geometric projects. In two of the projects i tried using organic shapes like free flowing triangles or crescents. The other two were more geometric and created a more creative negative space.

Textures
These rocks are bulging out of a flat surface. They are all different size and and shapes which creates a really interesting feeling. The flat surface herself is rough and the rocks are smooth.
The etchings on this wood are going in different directions and are on different bumps. Some of the bumps are overlapping and others are separated completely. All of them are smooth and shaped in different ways.
The rug is my my favorite. All boxes stand out enough that they can be pushed side to side. Each side is soft and give or take equal. They usually follow the same direction.

Friends Art
Thomas Sternglass and I went to Xavier High School together and i have watched his art slowly advance since freshman year. He now studies at Pratt University and is making some big steps to success. I love his art because it ranges in complexity. Also his monsters and characters are really interesting creatures. While catching up with him he told me that he was working on the combining his drawing and paint skills to make elaborate portraits. The following links connect you to his online portfolio but he also post a lot of his art on his Instagram. http://thomassternglassart.blogspot.com/
