Week 1 Assignment 1: Typeface in My Neighborhood

Typeface in My Neighborhood

Here is a gallery of typography examples in my neighborhood in the Bronx (Parkchester, Westchester Square, Bronx Park East)

The type in my neighborhood in the Bronx (Parkchester, Westchester Square, Bronx Park East) denotes a working class/middle class residential area with neighborhood shops and restaurants. Most of the signs are for stores. However, the area also has several churches and mosques/Islamic centers.

The neighborhood is also reflected through signs representative of NYC in general–the NYPL, the subway, with some classic font for city projects. The areas also have street signs and flags for particular districts. A few elegant types hearken back to some of the Bronx’s distinguished past–these would be for the magnificent natural conservatories the Botanical Garden and the Zoo.

The Bronx is understated, one of the lesser publicized boroughs. However, it is rich with history and has pockets of stunning beauty, as demonstrated by the conservatory and Zoo, and other classic type.
