Project #2 Magazine — Rasa

Rasa–A magazine of reflection on symbolism and meaning in art and architecture.

“Rasa” in Hinduism is the consciousness of sensitivity and appreciation, an emotional connection in art similar to the concept of catharsis in Aristotle’s Poetics. Art, form and function are examined in terms of semiotics–what is signified to be appreciated.

The audience would be those interested in art and philosophy and spirituality.

The layout, images, and type also invoke the Zen principle of Wabi-Sabi, a mindful approach to life that includes irregularities and an appreciation of the sensibilities of one or a few enriching principles over many overwhelming principles.

The magazine layout that inspired me is by Bartosz Kwiecien. It is noted as “Inspiration 34.” The layout (images below, from https://inspirationhut.net/inspiration/42-examples-of-magazine-layout-design/) has geometric elements combined with color and careful use of white space to balance text and images. What I want to glean from using this inspiration is to loosen up rigid ideas of placement into violating margins, and to find ways to use space and lessen the size of images and text–to avoid cluttering and overwhelming the reader.
