Trapped

Brooklyn bridge, September 17, 2012, Cristian Calle

This photograph was taken on September 17, 2012.  I took this photograph during a trip to Manhattan . My friends and I were crossing the bridge and the magnificent view caught my attention. What is interesting about this photograph is that in the background there is a nice view of the city and the the sun had almost completely fallen, but still shining some light. There are also some kind metal wires in the form of a net that creates an illusion as if the city is trapped in a net and, somehow, suspended in the air almost reaching the sky.

I like this photo because it was taken from a bridge and the bridges always give a breathtaking view of the city. What appealed to me the most was how the sunset in the background creates a dark outline of the skyscrapers and it also defines the swift streaks of clouds in the sky. I believe that the skyscrapers height works well in conjunction with the shape of the clouds due to the buildings heights. Just this small frame of New York gives people the anticipation of seeing what more New York has to offer in terms of sightseeing and the ambiance of the sky.

‘Trapped’ by Christian Calle conveys a visually haunting mood. Its mute dominant impression displays a dull, hazy tone which is ensnared by the clever use of frame. The juxtaposition between the twilight sky and metropolis skyline creates a silhouette dividing the entire picture in half. Frame is integral in this photo, on the top frame we see the light ‘open’ sky, on the left frame lies the edge of the skyline as opposed to the right depicting a small ‘opening’ from the wire mesh. The bottom frame displays the photographer’s viewpoint, the Manhattan Bridge; he is an outsider looking in. Wire mesh blankets the entire photo, hence the title, ‘Trapped’.
