Every college class is planned with certain goals in mind – to convey ideas, to encourage certain kinds of thinking, to provide opportunities for learning, for exploration, for practice. A typical plan consists of a mix of different activities, both in and out of class, and hopefully each activity contributes to achieving the goals of the class. In this assignment, I am going to ask you to think about some of the different things we do for this class and reflect on their effectiveness.
Some of the activities that make up this class are listed below. This list is not comprehensive (it may be missing things!), and includes both in-class and out-of-class activities.
Partial list of class activities:
- lectures
- webwork assignments
- openlab assignments
- exams
- answering questions at the board (often at the start of class)
- doing examples on the board (often during the course of a lecture)
- asking/answering questions on the OpenLab
- working on problems individually during class
- group work during class
- asking/answering questions by email
- office hours
Assignment (Due Thursday, April 18th, 2:30pm). Respond to at least two of the following questions (1 or 2 sentences each). Feel free to discuss activities that are not listed above, if you wish.
- What activities have been most useful to you in preparing for exams? Why?
- What activities have been most useful to you in making connections between the class material and other areas of your life? Why?
- What activities have been most useful in building community in our class (creating a comfortable atmosphere, getting to know your fellow students, building trust)? Why?
- Are there any activities that you would like to spend more time on (this includes activities that are not on the list, but you think should be included)? Explain?
Hi:)
#1 question: the most useful preparation for the test activity in this class was webwork, even though it was a bit frustrating fighting with the computer to get the right answer by being one number off, It gave a lot of practice by redoing the problem over and over again, sticking the procedure of the problem in your head.
#3 question: open lab was very nice on getting to know other people and their personal responses. It gave us a bigger picture of everyones personal hobbies, activities, enjoyment in life and their opinions.
3.) group work has been helpful getting to know fellow classmates. I believe it’s beneficial to get to know other students and possibly learning from them.
4.) this example is on the list but I believe we should spend a little more time on harder problems from the daily worksheet possibly doing more problems on the board? Those problems tend to the the ones on webwork and might show up on an exam.
Overall the extra credit, open lab assignments and webwork seem to bring grades up a significant amount and increase the amount of communication between students.
#1. Lectures, doing examples on the board during class and start of course lecture, and webwork assignments, are what’s most useful in prepare myself for exams.
#2 Open Lab, because often it connects what is taught to the real world, and I take that concept and apply it to my life, or other things that I am working on.
question #1- webwork assignments have definitely helped out in studying for exams as well as the review sheet handed out to practice similar problems that may arise on the exam. I also think that practice problems on the board really helps you understand the problem fully, therefore making my study session a bit shorter.
question #3- I think that working in groups definitely brings a more comfortable atmosphere, where students can get to ask other students for help and work together to solve problems.
Question #3: I think the activities that have been most useful in building community in our class is the group work because we get to interact with other students and help each other solve the problems. Also the open lab because we get to voice our own opinions on a specific topic and give positive feedback on other students post.
Question #1: i think the activities that have been most useful to me in preparing for the exams is the lectures because it helps us to have a better understanding on how we should approach a problem and solve it. the webwork also helps because it gives us more practice. i attend tutoring as well
#1. The most useful things for me have been the lectures, and the study guides for the tests. I do wish class was long because i feel like we do not have enough time to thoroughly cover topics and when it comes time to do the webworks assignments the problems given there are a lot more difficult than what we have seen during our lectures.
#3. Working in groups can be helpful at times but because of the time restraint we are usually unable to complete the assignment fully. Or if we are confused there isn’t enough time to go over it as a class so that you can properly explain it to everyone and we can all be on the same pace.
1. Lectures and webwork assignments really help prepare people for exams especially me. Practice makes perfect and with repetition you become better at any given topic, if even you was never good at it .
3. Group Work during class and Office hours I feel helps students get out of their comfort zone because during office hours other students need help as well as you and you do not feel so bad about yourself and you also learn to help each other out. Group work helps a lot because you have to communication to get the job done and you also help each others weak spots.
1) I feel that answering questions on the board at the start of class helps a great deal for me because most times I its the students have the same issue with me in how to solve the problem.
2) Asking and answering questions on Open Lab helps me, Most often when I read what problems they are asking , its usually the same for me so I get help by reading what everyone’s question and I get to see what step I had an error with.
Question #1: In preparing for exams I feel the best preparation has been from web work, doing examples on the board, individual/group work as well as office hours have offered the best assistance to want to do well on the exams. They have provided better understanding of the material since I am more of a visual learner which helps tremendously in trying to solve various equations.
Question#3: The activities that have helped most would be web work, doing examples on the board, individual/group work as well as office hours it shows that my fellow students have similar problems in trying to do the work and can benefit from one another. Meaning that we can help see where we went wrong and get on the same page in understanding the material better.
In this class we do a lot of activities which help us to understand the material better. Webwork assignments help to improve what we learned in class. There are some hard problems but due to asking questions by email makes it easier. I like working on problems individually during class. Because I can be more focused and concentrated. Overall, all the activities are related to each other and I like all the activities so far.
Hi ,
Q1: 1.What activities have been most useful to you in preparing for exams? is the review sheet with answers, and also correcting it in class , makes the preparation for exams easier.
Q2: 2.What activities have been most useful to you in making connections between the class materials and other areas of your life? Why?
In my opinion , the webwork and openlab are really great because the student can reach the professor to help the homework and understand the problems provided in the assignments.
Question #1 : Once we enter the classroom, taking time to answer questions is very helpful so that we don’t move on to another topic without understanding the concept from before. Lecturing doing examples is the major priority of the class and Webwork is an essential for more practice.
Question #2: Webwork is great for practicing. I believe when we get review sheets, we can go over them so that we know what to expect and where our mistake was. This can also help boost up our grades.
Question #1)
The activity that I find most useful preparing for exams is lecturing in class, because if something is not understood it can be cleared up from being lectured on what is being done wrong.
Question #3)
The activity most useful in building a community in class is doing group work because you get to know more about other people in the class.
1.What activities have been most useful to you in preparing for exams? Why?
– I believe webworks and lectures have been most useful for preparing for exams because it the lectures teach you how to do new subjects while the webworks gives you examples and tells you if you do it wrong, so you can redo.
3.What activities have been most useful in building community in our class (creating a comfortable atmosphere, getting to know your fellow students, building trust)? Why?
-Most useful to me would be group work because you meet other students and work on problems together which helps you learn from other peoples perspectives. Also, i believe open lab opens you up to learning more about classmates, and what they like/ dislike.
1. The most useful activities that have been helpful in preparing for in class exams are the Webwork homework assignments, class lectures, and office hours. The lectures build a foundation in conjunction with completing the webwork assignments, which is most helpful in exam preparation because the examples are very similar to the questions on the test. Having office hours is a bonus in my opinion where students can receive extra help in areas where they are not as strong in for the exam or just to clarify anything that they may be unsure of.
2. Group work assignments have been most useful in building our class community because it allows students to work together on a specific task where everyone does there part, building trust and setting a comfortable atmosphere.
Hey Candice,
It’s great to see that you did your OpenLab. Do you think you’ll arrive early today?
Question #1: The activities that have been most useful and help me prepare for tests are the lectures, WebWork assignments, and office hours. Once I have my notes from lecture, I’m able to refer to my notes as a guideline, which enables me to see exactly how the problem was solved. I love being able to have unlimited access to the notes and WebWork because it aides in flexibility and I can study at any timke and place.
Question #3: The activities that helped me to get to know my piers are OpenLab and group work. While doing these activities, I was able to decipher with whom I could discuss problems, share notes, and keep around as a partner with positive energy.

1. I would say that the lectures, open-lab & web-work, answering questions at the board, doing the examples, answering emailed questions, group work and the office hours help a lot for the exams.
These activities provide a better sense of applying what i know and understand about the math operations of Statistics.
3. Group Work, doing examples on the board, answering questions at the board, are definitely useful in building a community in our class. This will encourage more students to express what they have problems with and help others at the same time.

1) The activity that I tend to do for preparing for an exam is taking a nap. The reason why is because after a nap I’m well rested and I can focus better.
2) The activity thats most useful for me in connection between class areas and other areas is when I go work. In my uncles store I mostly handle the money and math definity kicks in then.
3) The most useful activity in building a community in our class is the group work. The reason why is we all help each other with our flaws.
4) The activity that I would like to spend more time is on exam preparation a class. I think as a class we should spend more time so it would be easy for the class as a whole to under the material.
I think that working individually on problems and examples on the board have been the most useful for test preparation. These activities allow students to work at their own pace and aren’t pressured to keep up with a group – or the lesser possibility, where they may not feel obligated to put forth as much effort because they are part of a group.
I would like to spend more time writing out examples step-by-step on the board. The repetitive process of going over the same steps numerous times help me to retain information. If I only go over something once, I’m less likely to remember it. I think for future classes, it would be helpful to incorporate a project that allows students to apply statistics to something outside of the classroom, whether it be relating to work, a hobby, or something else. Applying it to something that a student relates to is useful to help the student make a connection and have a greater understanding of the principles of statistics.
The things that help me prepare th best for exams are lectures. Doing examples on the board ranging form easy to hard helps me prepare for the exams because I can use them as a reference in order to prepare.
1. Activities that have been most useful to me before exams are the exam review sheets. They give me more of a idea of exactly how the test will look. I like doing the review sheets with a peer. When we work together we help each other solve all the problems correctly with a better understanding.
2. I really enjoy doing these openlab assignments because they let us have a better understanding of our peers. I also like doing the problems before class together because it seems we all have the same or very similar errors. From this we learn from our mistakes and work together to solve the problems.
Hello,
I would be responding to questions three and four;
Question 3:
The activites that have been most useful in building a community in my class are when we work in groups. This creates a comfortable atmosphere and allows us to get to know our fellow classmates. If we have questions about the webwork we can ask one another or when can get into study groups after class and work on it together in a comfortable environmet.
