Import and Export

As it relates to exports from Switzerland, it was $319 billion dollars in 2020. In comparing this amount to the previous few years, this is a 5.3% increase from 4 years earlier, in 2016. Also from one year to the next, exports increased by 1.5% from 2019 to 2020 (Sig Tax, 2021). The majority of Switzerland’s exports are purchased from the United States, Germany, China, United Kingdom, France, etc. (World Stop Export, 2021). The top ten Switzerland exports that contributed to the $319 billion dollars are pharmaceuticals, precious metals, organic chemicals, machinery, clocks/watches, medical supplies, electrical machinery, plastics, and coffee/tea/spices (Layers Switzerland, 2021). These ten exports count for over 87.7% of the overall money coming into Switzerland. 

Regarding Switzerland’s imports, the most frequently imported item is gold and that is 21% of the total imports. Overall, Switzerland typically imports machinery, metals, and chemicals (Sig Tax, 2021). The 2nd most frequently imported item is medicines with 6% of the overall import amount for Switzerland (World Stop Export, 2021). Although it is not the majority, other imports to Switzerland include computers, agriculture products, and textiles (Layers Switzerland, 2021). Switzerland imports most of its goods from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, France, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Ireland, in order of the frequency, from most to least.
