In the past few days at my NYPIRG internship, the routine of phone banking and clipboarding took an unexpected turn as I found myself assigned to the Small Claims Court Action Center (SCCAC). The SCCAC served as a volunteer-run hotline, providing free insights to anyone seeking guidance on navigating the intricacies of Small Claims Court. This unique experience not only broadened my understanding of legal processes but also allowed me to contribute to the empowerment of individuals seeking justice.
My responsibilities at the SCCAC involved handling inquiries from individuals who had left messages on our website. Armed with a disclaimer emphasizing that I am not a lawyer and cannot provide legal advice, I engaged in conversations, sharing factual information and outlining options without crossing the line into legal counsel. It was a delicate balance, ensuring that callers understood the nature of the information provided and its limitations.
Each call followed a scripted format provided by the SCCAC, dissecting the nature of the claim and offering guidance on various topics such as landlord-tenant disputes, security deposit issues, and other common small claims scenarios. It was a fulfilling experience, knowing that I could assist individuals in taking the first steps towards resolving their disputes, even if it meant just pointing them in the right direction.
Simultaneously, a new responsibility emerged – the creation of posters and Instagram posts. Responding to the need for tangible work to showcase in our final presentation, my Project Coordinator requested an array of promotional materials. Although uncertain if they would be used immediately, the posters and posts became a testament to our creativity and dedication, ready for deployment whenever needed.
As the semester neared its end, the focus shifted from direct student engagement to co-hosting events with other NYPIRG chapters across CUNYs and SUNYs. The collaborative efforts aimed to amplify our impact and address broader issues affecting the student body. While the days may have taken a detour from the usual routine, the variety of tasks allowed for a richer learning experience and a diverse set of skills honed.
In reflection, these eventful days underscored the adaptability and versatility demanded in the world of advocacy. From providing legal insights to crafting impactful visual materials, my internship journey took a dynamic turn, offering a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of the work we do at NYPIRG. As the semester approached its conclusion, I felt a sense of accomplishment in having contributed to the SCCAC and leaving a creative mark through the posters and posts. The journey continues, evolving with each new challenge and opportunity, preparing me for a future where empowerment through information and creative expression can drive positive change.
