Week 5
During my internship, I learned many useful skill for the real industry. I learned how to use mathematical solution to make work more efficient. I learned Whenever working in a project, working on a vector base file will save a lot more time for the future developing. I learn design wise skill as well as software skill for industry. My duty as a designer has a huge utility from the knowledge of my school major.
There was a collaborative project I have to directly communicate with the sign smith. We receive a project to create a 72 x 48 inches Sign for Bangkok Bar. When my supervisor introduce us the job, she wants me to start creating a template on the software and indicated every surface’s length and width. She also want me to put the designed file to the sign surface. After I done everything, a senior designer came over and told me I have to ask how the smith want to assemble all the surface. I have to make some subtraction in order to make it fit without further cutting. Extra cutting will takes unnecessary time and less accurate. Therefore, I go to the smith and ask the way he want to assemble, and I go back and fixed. The second problem comes after I finish the first one. The white letter in the file, My supervisor wants me to eliminate the area so they can just print out the negative space for the letters so the machine can do the rest of the work. I was shocked because I never know how to do it in illustrator. After I asked another designer, she introduce a tool call path finder to make shape subtracting. During this task, I learned that it’s important to communicate with another department before we start. In a collaborative project, we basically communicate face to face because we just have a small working area. The successful part of this project is that we eventually finish the workflow and crafted the final product. I think I can work on communication a little bit more so it will make my work more efficient. Any uncertainty should report first instead of making guess.
In this project, I would tell myself that I did pretty good, but obviously something needs to be worked on in many aspect. My co-workers and supervisor appreciated my hard working, and likes my thirst of learning. I will keep up my good part and expect more to learn day by day. Rome is not built in one day.
This week I took my chance to see the power connection of a neon light sign.
I also learn how to load a new roll of paper scroll.
This printer can print out huge (approximately 72×48 inches) banner. When this machine out of paper, it will keep printing on the same area. You can see a dark bar because the ink overlapping on the same area.
Today I was assigned to recreate the company business card. Before I have came up any good solution, I was told to make some adjustment on the Howard Johnson project. Now they want to remove the glass roof, push the door back in, and add black cloth or silver cloth on each glass door. (the door’s height will be 9 feet, and the cloth will be 2 feet at the top and 2 feet at the bottom.)
Because my previous design was in photoshop, that will be harder when I try to do some size relative manipulation. Fortunately, the senior designer in our company is very kind. He told me every time I do drawing effect should be in Illustrator. There are 2 purposes by using Illustrator. Whenever we need to changed size, I can manipulate it because it is vector base. Second, Illustrator has better layout system than photoshop. However, the final effect has to be done in photoshop.
