Week 3
Vida’s Graphic& Sign company is owned by a Chinese couple. All employees are not asked to be dress up, but are required to dress clean and neat. I normally have a long sleeve T shirt and a jean. we are working in a open work area. We have a laser cutter machine, heavy duty printer, and a cutting machine in the work area. We also have many types of sign and poster products hanging on wall so we can introduce to client when they are consulting with us. we have many emhployee working in vary hours. Designer mostly works five days a week and 8 hours aday. Sign smith works ten hours a day and five days a week. For me, I work 10 hours a day and around 1:00 P.M. I have a lunch break about 30 minutes.
I got some “hand on” experiences by doing sign. I see how the industrial cutting machine operated.
The designer try to fit in as many letters as possible in a rectangle panel so they don’t waste any part of the panel. After they finish the alignment, they save it in the thumb drive and plug into the cutting machine. The cutting machine can only read that specific format. Then the operator try to find the target file in the machine screen, and the screen just show text and folder and file icon.When he set up everything, the machine will do the rest.By the way, the working environment is very though, because a lot of plastic dust will be produced while the machine is cutting.
I also have poster design for a restaurant. An Asian restaurant want to have 3 perforated poster on each glass window. I was told to design 3 poster for Thai food, Vietnamese food and Chinese food. My supervisor want me to put two or three food for each poster, and a headline to indicated each category. Originally, I try to make a clean design, think outside of the box. However, my original design could not apply for regular clients. I learned a lesson that, in school design, our professor and art students will more appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the typography will play a bigger role in creativity. However, whoever is not an artist would tend to imagery, the visual. Actually that’s less work. I don’t have to create graphic or adjust too much texting. I just put background and place images. Here are the final works.
