TCET 2102 Analog and Digital Telephony

Prerequisite:
TCET 1100 : Introduction to Telecommunications

EET 2140, EET 2162, PHYS 1433

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to modern voice-delivery networks. Traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) and its equipment are discussed in detail. Switching and signaling in PSTN are discussed from both physical layers and protocols standpoints. Modern trends in voice delivery are presented. Voice-over-IP, broadband technology (ADSL, FTTP, cable-TV, etc.) and cellular telephony are studied. Internet telephony systems, such as Skype, are discussed. Laboratory experiments supplement the course and expose students to the fundamentals of modern voice delivery technology.
