Value-Added Portraits: Phase 3

I really liked the chance we had to digitalize our images. I tried to stay as true as I could to the original details and layout of the image but I looked for certain areas were I could blur the lines between the specific squares so I could create and even better flow and unity. I believed that the eye would automatically complete the lines mentally if I correctly lined up the different spaces.

Project 6 Phase 3: Color Harmony

Fireflies by Garnet Garcia

I feel like the most difficult part of this part of the project was keeping the colors proportional to the original image. I had a very clear image of what I wanted to do and where the colors would go, but I found myself having to get creative with how much of each color I used, for example how much skin was showing. I also had to find a away to include the green/mint shades which I accomplished with the fire flies. This project was also special to me because it allowed me to use one of my original characters from my work and incorporate it into the illustration. All in all, it was awesome to see these colors work so harmoniously together in a completely different context.

Color Harmony: Phase 3

For this piece, I drew a natural scene of a wolf, walking along-side a river, by a mountain range, with a night sky, and the moon peaking behind the mountains.

From the proportional color inventory used in phase 2, I saw water—lots of water—and a night sky. I thought about natural scenaries that included being near a river or a lake, and created an image in my head of a mountainous region using the muted purple. I used the darkest color in my inventory as a silhouette color on the wolf figure, to demonstrate shade progression.

Color Interaction Pairings: Phase 3

Using red to describe my partners vibrant, confident personality and a lightning bolt because I see her as a strong individual who stands out. She used this deep blue to describe me as strong and stable adding a crown to express that I also stand out. We noticed yet very different people both of us give off a strong energy. We led with that mostly. We altered the symbols color an created a saturated color we both agreed on. Against the primary blue hue background the symbol came off warmer and with the red primary hue background a more lavender hue. Both background hues are pure prismatic hues that aren’t complements but work well with one another and makes it possible to see the contrast of the symbols. Great project!

Color Interaction Pairings: Phase 3

Wave/Atom

For this project me and my partner Mike brainstormed by listing out our traits and basic info about our lives; where we’re from, our families etc. One trait that followed us both was that we were both creative which we defined as a lighter violet color. Based on my traits I was defined as a blue-violet and I chose a light green for Mike. The background of my icon makes the similar color we chose seem even cooler than it is, and the opposite is true with Mike’s icon where green makes the violet appear much brighter and warmer.

Obvious Figure/Ground Final Inked Composition

Ambiguous Figure/Ground Final Inked Composition

An Inked version of the sketches. These shapes have been the same and are both organic. I inverted the color scheme for my Obvious/Figure Ground because I didn’t have much ink but I wish I didn’t. The logo would better portray the concept of purity if was a white flower. I also undid my initial edit shown in my sketch because I couldn’t proportion it correctly

Color Interaction Pairings: Phase 3

This project was rather quick but it was because my partner and I had very solid ideas of the colors we had in mind for each other. My partner was Ebony and she immediately thought of me as being a bright red for my energetic, outgoing and passionate personality. When she asked me what symbol was a good representation of myself I said the sun, but when she suggested lighting because of its electrifying presence that made you pay attention to it right in that moment, I was both flattered and fully convinced that it matched me way better. For Ebony I has always seen her as a very strong and well grounded person but one that carried themselves with elegance. She still had a very cool and playful personality, so I saw a deep blue-violet as a color that represented all these things. I suggested the symbol of the crown not only because deep blues and violets are usually associated with both power and elegance but also because I felt that it paralleled the lighting bolt in the theme of power. Both colors are very saturated and bold even though one is on the warm side of the wheel and the other is on the cool side, and the symbols both represented a powerful commanding presence, one in a loud, immediate way and the other in a firm and authoritative way.

The color interaction of this piece had to do with the a change in hue but not value, for the background colors. The effect on the common color, pink, was that against the red background it appeared to be cooler in contrast while on the blue it appeared to be warmer. This is because the very prismatic hues create the illusion of the icon having the “filter” of their complementary color. Against the red, the lighting bolt appears more green/cool. Against the blue, the crown appears more orange/warm.

Shawn and Marcel

From Shawn’s calm, low voice, and mellow, sleepy personality, I perceived his color to be a blue chromatic gray. Shawn’s came up with an orange chromatic gray as a joke of my hatred of orange.

We shared the brick red color from capturing the color of his notebook, and turning it into a chromatic gray value.

Saturation Studies: Phase 3

Swiss Poster

For this project, Mike and I were assigned this poster format and were told our color theme was “cool”. After coming up with a myriad of names for our lead band, we eventually settled on the name California Sushi Wave. Our first name was actually just Sushi Wave but we added the California part later on. California isn’t cool in terms of temperature, it’s typically considered a warm place but we chose it because it is a “cool” place in terms of popularity. People who have never been there typically want to go there so we considered it as a cool place. Our backup bands were our honorable mentions, things we didn’t want to use as our main band name but “Mint Sickness” was really close to being our main band. For that one, we’d probably choose colors closer to green like a blue-green. The colors we chose was blue, blue-violet and violet. We thought these colors fit the theme of cool very well but we also took advantage of the design of our poster. the venn diagram design really lets these colors overlap and brighten up the violet to keep it from being too dark.
