Field Trip to Brooklyn Museum

Robert Longo, Untitled (Vatican Bishops), Charcoal on mounted paper, 2015-16

Sergei Eisenstein, Alexander Nevsky, Film, 1938

To me these two works stood out immediately. They both have a similar message. First off, the subject in the media are both facing away from the audience and heir backs are towards us. Usually we are are used to seeing the face, side, or quarter view if a person is shown. Both Longo and Eisenstein chose the unconventional route and made a composition in which their we interact with the work. Through the position the men are faced, we are able to interact with the composition and it is sorta like we are a a part of the art.

When first seeing the art it is overwhelming because they are displayed in a grand way. They are very large and tower over you so it’s hard to interpret at first glance.

Sound Visualizations: Phase 4

I thought the project was interesting and I really learned how to pay attention and focus on beats individually and recognize the difference between when something is staccato and when something is legato. I think I did a good job conveying both staccato and legato through my drawing and animation.

Value Range Research

The first picture is a dramatic picture that has a narrow value range of lowkey value. The center is the light from the projector. The background is mostly composed of a narrow range from black to dark gray. This helps create a contrast between the two focal points

The first picture mostly has a narrow range of highkey value. the center object has mostly light values from gray to almost white. The only contrast shown is underneath the smaller diamond.

I used two songs that I thought had a good use of staccato and legato. One is mostly an instrumental song with some vocals and the other is amore vocal and instrument heavy song. The second one uses mostly funky beats and I thought it would be cool to animate. I wanted the staccato drawings to be mostly slow and easy going so i mostly spaced out the key frames. For the legato drawings i wanted to create a sense of a beat or a steady motion.

I probably worked on this around 1-2 hours

Sound Visualizations: Phase 1

Sleepyhead by Passionpit to me has an erratic beat but is also has a steady beat especially in the beginning. I thought of the song with geometric shapes that repeat on the beat. at around 0:40 i imagine it to be more o a steady smooth feeling and then increasing in pace as the song continues. Theres almost a high pitch wiring going on in most of the song and to me that represents almost a geometric or industrial shape.

The beat that is playing constantly throughout the song also changes from a soft or muffled sound to a heavier louder one. This changes how I interpret the song. To me Sleepyhead is supposed to be about a weird dream and the space between consciousness and unconsciousness. But also the high pitches worked into the song keep me awake and alert.
