Robert Longo, Untitled (Vatican Bishops), Charcoal on mounted paper, 2015-16

Sergei Eisenstein, Alexander Nevsky, Film, 1938

To me these two works stood out immediately. They both have a similar message. First off, the subject in the media are both facing away from the audience and heir backs are towards us. Usually we are are used to seeing the face, side, or quarter view if a person is shown. Both Longo and Eisenstein chose the unconventional route and made a composition in which their we interact with the work. Through the position the men are faced, we are able to interact with the composition and it is sorta like we are a a part of the art.

When first seeing the art it is overwhelming because they are displayed in a grand way. They are very large and tower over you so it’s hard to interpret at first glance.
