PROJECT #3 – FLATS

WHAT I LEARN?

In project # 3 – Flats, I learned many aspects about Technical Direction.

Prototype and sample materials. In our project, we select to make curve flat in 3’-0″ radius and 4’-0” Height. The test was great. I learned that when I make a 3’-0″ radius curve flat, the frame need to have different dimensions. For example, an inside curve flat, the radius of the frame need to be 3’-0 ¼”, with this radius, we can attach the Lauan or wiggle on it and make 3′-0″ radius.

The wiggle, is a bending plywood that is flexible for making curve walls. Short barrel wiggle can be bended in both directions according to the needs. But, more stable is ΒΌ Lauan because it is a firm material, and the curve flat is more stable. We used Lauan with a grain in horizontal direction.

Jacks. To solve the problem in how the flat can be stand up firm, we decided to build two 12’-0” jacks, three 8’-0” jacks, and four 4’-0” jacks. 12’-0” and 8’-0” jacks will be join in the floor of the flats. But, the 4’-0” jack will be installed in the top of the door flat to allow people walk inside the door. Also, to join the flats with the jacks, we decided to add 2×4 lumber pieces in the frame of the flats. Also as a team, we decided to build all 4’-0” jack in 2×2 mechanical square metal tube, and join it with angles iron for better installation with the flats.

Slammed door. We decided to build an entire piece of 12’-0” H x 5’-0” W flat that contain a 6 panel 30 x 80 prehung door. To make the drawings, we saw a Home Depot video where it teach us how to make and install a prehung door. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Builders-Choice-30-in-x-80-in-6-Panel-Solid-Core-Unfinished-Clear-Pine-Single-Prehung-Interior-Door-HDCP6626R/202523949

The frame of the flat for install this door need to be 2×4 lumber material. Also, for installation purpose, we need to have ΒΌ of empty space in each side of the door.

Moulding. I visited Dykes in order to have a quote of the five molding that the drawing has. They gave us the quote in flat moulding and flexible moulding. For the crown moulding, we propose to use a model #611, which is the biggest crown moulding that the company has. For install #611 moulding we will to add a small piece of wood in the back in order to support the moulding. In my visit to Dykes company, I learned that they can make any curve moulding. They only request a template with the real dimensions. This dimensions can be given to them in regular paper.
