    1. We chose the transportation industry. Our main focus will be moving from fossil fuel cars to electric cars.
    2. The three steps we have identified are:
    – Educate/encourage the public to purchase and use electric transportation.
    – Make charging stations more readily available.
    – Give tax rebates to those that purchase or use electric transportation.
    3. Economic and environmental benefits:
    – Lower rates/ fares for mass transit
    – Tax rebates
    – Potential to boost the economy
    – Overall less pollution.
    4. We should measure progress by monitoring fossil fuel sales in NYS. If less people. Are consuming fossil fuels and switching to electric, then the sales should reduce.

    Industry: Public Transportation

    1. Public transportation can be made more sustainable by embarking on a program to purchase and use electric vehicles mainly public buses and other small vehicles.

    2. Role out a training program for operating and maintenance staff to train the personnel before phasing out the current vehicles utilizing fuel. Purchase 10% of electric vehicles for the first phase and put the electric vehicles in operation shortly after the staff is trained enough to maintain and operate the electric vehicles. Follow up with refresher training, while the remainder of the staff will continue with initial training.

    3. The economic benefits will directly be related to consumer saving from owning their private vehicles and use public transportation. The consumer savings can be used for a better quality of life.

The environmental benefits from the implementation of the electric for public transportation will contribute to less carbon footprint.

    4. We propose to measure the progress by issuing a rebate to each household that does not have a vehicle and lesser rebate to that household with a vehicle that uses fuel. We will start the rebate 2 years into the program and planning to increase the rebate according to the success after ten years. The rebate will be paid from the savings on fuel consumption.

    1. Kapeel, Nikita and John:
This sounds like a great start in the direction of developing cleaner public transportation. The rebates to
households that have purchased electric vehicles would be a good incentive for others to do the same. To
measure progress, you could look at the whether electric vehicle sales increased over the year and
      by how much.

    1. The MTA is an ongoing progress. We focus on the security part for the MTA/ Public Transportation. They should invest in surveillance video cameras and security guards or NYPD. This also helps when a crime occurs. There should be more security.

    2. To add more security cameras, add NYPD or security officers on platforms to watch the security camera and the platform.

    3. Helping with installing cameras can help with security. There will be more jobs and a bit more safety. Economic and environmental benefit: improving the utilization of transportation resources, alleviating traffic congestion, reducing traffic pollution, and saving land resources and energy. Using more renewable energy resources.

    4. Progress can be checked by receiving feedback from commuters based on how satisfied they are. It can also be proved when the crime rate statistic comes out.

    1. Okay. Indeed, improved security can lead to more users and take more cars off the road. Using more renewable energy
sources is a good idea – how/where could renewable energy sources be implemented?
In terms of measuring progress, surveying commuters can certainly provide valuable information
about the perception of improvement. Is there any data you could look at – say after one year – that might
also provide an indication that the security changes are having a positive effect?

    1. Explain in detail how the industry your group has chosen to focus on can be made more sustainable on the basis of one or more of these goals.

A: For a better and more sustainable public transportation, cleanliness would be one way to make it possible. Having cleaner public transportation would appeal to more customers because no one would like their commute to be in a dirty environment. To maintain cleanliness, public transportation companies should have staff maintenance for public areas. This can also help prevent damage costs in the future because there won’t be any built up of dirtiness in the public areas. Since there is less car on the street to produce air pollution and noise pollution. A new gate between the platform and railroad can keep people stay away from dangerous.

    2. What specific steps do you believe need to be taken to achieve significant improvements toward the goals you have identified over the next 10 year

In the next 10 years, a number of measures could be implemented to improve public transport with a profound positive impact on commuters. The steps to be taken and to encourage transit riders are to increase the service for those who leave work late at night, such as longer working hours. Improve passenger comfort, such as reduced crowding, better seats, and cleaner stations by adding more garbage cans. Create comfortable, clean, attractive and safe stations with services such as air conditioning during the summer and heating in the winter, public telephones, clearer restrooms, vendors and improve internet services. Improved security for transit users and pedestrians. Lastly, a more convenient fare payment like electronic smart cards will be added and MetroCard can be refilled online instead of the train station.

    3. Identify the economic and environmental benefits that would result.

New York is one of the most populated states in the county. The majority of the New York population if not all depend on public transportation, which includes trains and local buses. The common problem that most train stations have is a garbage issue. Shortage of garbage cans pushes people to drop their trash on the trains truck and everywhere on the train station the thing that not only affecting the environment but also causing a delay of trains and attracting more rats. These issues are making people quitting public transportation and driving their own cars even if they have to deal with traffic. MTA needs to put an effort to resolve the crisis of New York public transportation. Enforcing and maintaining cleaner trains and stations will not only benefits the environment but also will attract more people to switch to public transportation which will result in an increase in revenue. Reaching these goals will require MTA to provide more trash cans, hiring more people for sanitation and also implementing a recycling machine in every train station.

    4. Explain how you will propose to measure progress toward the goals you have set?

A first method to measure the progress toward our goals would be to monitor the revenue the public transportation has been acquiring and to observe the statistic of who’s been using it. If we see that there is a positive trend consisting of an increase in revenue and the number of customers using it, we are ultimately making progress. Another method will be to survey the population that has been utilizing public transportation. This method will allow us to assess the responses commuters would like to express the positive changes. Thus, we could know specifically what is working and what isn’t. Acknowledging these responses could help us accomplish our goals and set new goals.

    1. Yes. Good suggestions on how to measure progress. An upward trend in revenue from fares and in the
number of users would be a good indication of progress on the goals you have outlined. Your suggestion
of soliciting feedback from riders can also provide an effective indication of whether progress on
      these goals is visible.

    Industry: Public Transportation

    1. An efficient and eco-friendly public transportation system is a key to reduce carbon emission and get the public from point A to point B

    2. Replace the current buses with more efficient buses, which will reduce carbon emission. Recycle parts from old trains and buses for the new production of electric buses and eco friendly train. Every bus terminals and train terminals should be powered by solar energy. Also educate the bus and train operators, and staff about sustainability and how each individual can make a difference. Keep the buses and trains clean to attract the public.

    3. As more people are taking public transportation, this particular sector will benefit financially.

    4. Decreasing fossil fuel sales and increasing financials is a good way to measure progress. Record keeping on how many buses and trains that are currently using fossil fuels and how many of them have been replaced.
