My name is Shafana Begum and I studied in the New York City College of Technology majoring in the Business and Technology of Fashion. Coming this far in my academics is a big feat within my family, as I am the youngest and will be the second child to graduate with a baccalaureate. I grew up in a practicing Muslim family with 4 older siblings and my parents. At a young age I have always struggled to find clothes for myself because of the lack big sizes and modest clothes. This pushed me to want to study within the fashion industry. My long-term goal is to work in the fashion industry after graduating and create my own clothing line that would concentrate on a minority group while being open to the majority.
Throughout my years of studying, I have found a renewed passion to follow as a fashion student. After doing research papers almost every semester, it came my attention how the Muslim/modest communities get unnoticed within the fashion industry. Fashion is known to be primarily what is trending but it is beyond that, it includes personal taste and self expression. I wish to hone into these prospects of fashion and show how minorities can be included in fashion as well.
