On September 21, 2002, a girl named Lianne, was born in Dhaka Bangladesh. Ever since she was born, her mother’s dream was to teach her English, she wanted Lianne to speak in English fluently which is me by the way, I’m Lianne, Hi! The subsequent thing I remember is catching a flight to America, I was about 6 years old. Coming to the America, was probably one of the most exciting moments of my life. Met new people, made friends, new school, new way of learning and what not. New school meant, new experience, new teachers, new way of learning and reading, situations were pretty tough for me to handle since I was a newbie.

Going back to the first day school, I was petrified. I remember being in English class, it was my turn to read an excerpt…my hands were shaking, I was all sweaty. So, I started reading, few kids laughed at me since I had an accent as I went on, I mispronounced a word and I remember the entire class laughing at me. I mean come on, we were six years old back then what do you expect? That day after I came home and shared the incident with my mom, she promised to assist me become a good reader and teach me how to write sentences. So, our little quest began,  I remember, my mother taking me to the library, we’d get new books almost every other week, she would read me nightly and talk over with me about 5 mins, asking what I thought about the story and how does it make me feel. I remember her pointing out big words for me pronounce, she’d wait until I got it right and this is how I’ve learned how to read.

Everyone has their own way of reading, in my opinion the way you read is one of the many things that defines you as a person. Your way of reading says a lot about you. It’s s like the saying, “You are what you read.” Now, when I think back, my mother has really pushed me to be the best. Her strategy helped me overcome my fear of reading.
