Hi Class,
I’ve put the assignment details for Essay 1 on the “Assignments” menu tab. Please print it out, read it carefully, and bring it class next week.
ALSO:
Read Wharton’s “Afterward” and Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”
Read Chapter 3 in Groom
Please Do Not write Journal 4 just yet.
Enjoy the weekend and bring in any questions on the readings.
Cheers,
Prof. Scanlan
Hi Class,
Good discussion of Stevenson’s novel. Here’s a recap of the homework for next Thursday:
1. Reread the final two chapters of Jekyll and Hyde. Then write Journal 3: a 250 word summary of those two chapters.
2. Read Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in American Gothic Tales (AGT).
3. Read chapter 2 in Groom’s The Gothic: A Very Short Introduction
Let me know if you have any ideas for The Daily Goth!
Best,
Sean
Hi Class,
Here is the Black Cat. Please note that it is the version from out book American Gothic Tales. I’ve also posted it in Readings

Hi Class,
GREAT discussion!
I’ve updated the Weekly Schedule, again. Here is what to work on for Thursday:
1. Print out and read Poe’s “The Black Cat” located in the Readings menu tab
2. In your notebook, answer these two questions: what do you think of the narrator and what are the social problems described in the story. In class I said that this is Journal 2, but I misspoke. This is homework, not a Journal. I apologize for that slip. What this means is that you do not have to turn it in. But if you want to submit it to me, I will count it as extra credit.
3. Work on getting the books.
Best,
Prof. Scanlan
Hi Class,
Thanks for a great beginning class last week. I’ve uploaded a new weekly schedule in the Vital Information menu tab.
Here is the New York Times article on Mt. Tambora:

Let me know if you have any questions.

ps. I’ve altered my office hours slightly. Tuesday: 3-4 (not 2-3)
Hi Class,
Welcome to Gothic Literature and Culture, section D560.
This course site will be very important to us during the semester, so please familiarize yourself with its features. It will become a meeting “place” of sorts where we can communicate with each other and where we can upload ideas, images, film, and texts that we will need this semester. I will also put important documents, such as assignments details and helpful writing/research aids, on this site.
Our Books:
Please get the right version by using the ISBN number on the Course Policy.
The readings for next Tuesday can be found by going to the “READINGS” menu tab. First, print out and carefully read Alan Lloyd-Smith’s “Chapter One: What is American Gothic?” Second, print out the short story by Shirley Jackson titled “The Lottery,” read it carefully, and write type a 250-word response to these two questions: What makes this story gothic, and did you like it? I will collect this typed response (Journal 1) on Tuesday, September 1.
Best wishes,
Prof. Scanlan
