Hi Class,
Just to repeat:
Turn in your Translation Essay via Blackboard. Once in our class you will see an announcement and directions.
Best,
Prof. Scanlan
Sorry class, I know some students wanted one-on-one help today.
Seems I have a cold of some sort (I’m testing for Covid every day, and so far I’m negative). It hurts to too much to talk for an hour.
Please email your questions, and I’ll do my best to respond quickly.
Cheers,
Prof. Scanlan
Agenda for March 31
1–Finish Induction, then watch a few minutes of role reversal staging.
2–Then begin Zefferelli version
Questions for Act I:
1–Why do you think Baptista wants Kate to marry first?
2–What is Hortensio’s scheme that will enable him to marry Bianca?
3–What is Tranio’s and Lucentio’s scheme to help Lucentio marry Bianca?
4–Describe Petruchio…why is he in Padua?
5–What does Hortension encourage Petruchio to do?
HOMEWORK:
Submit translation essay before class on Tuesday, April 5 via Blackboard. Instructions will be posted Thursday, by 5pm.
Agenda:
1–Freewrite 1: Questions about Translation Essay
2–Freewrite 2: Questions about Induction or Act 1 of Taming of Shrew
3–Answers from the Freewrites: Look at Student Example
4–Read first lines of TOS
5–Watch three clips of TOS
HOMEWORK:
Post an outline of the Translation Essay (at least 200 words) to OpenLab category “Translation Essay Outline” by Thursday’s class.
And if you have not read the Induction and Act I, please do so.
Agenda:
1–Freewrite: What questions do you have about the end of Persepolis?
2–Compromise
3–Differences between text and film? What is left out of the film and why?
4–Introduction to The Taming of the Shrew by W. Shakespeare
Homework:
1–Read Induction and Act I of The Taming of the Shrew — in Readings menu tab. [I swapped out the versions of this play–I think this Folder version is easier to read and follow as it has more stage directions]
***Bonus: here is a fun and brief summary of the play (highly recommended):
2–Read assignment instructions for Translation Essay, then write 100 word introduction and thesis paragraph. Be prepared to read your introduction in class for 5 participation points on Tuesday. Of course, if you want to write more than a 100 words, that’s great. But you only need to read the first paragraph or so.
Note: A draft of the essay will be posted to OpenLab on Thursday. Final draft is due via Blackboard on April 5.
