Nicolas 4– Guilt And Choice

In chapter 4, HP confronts Linnet about her actions against Jackie as she was a friend she trusted and she took Simon from her. Linnet argues that she isn’t hurting Jackie because Simon never loved her and that she is actually helping out Jackie as their relationship would have never worked out even if they did marry. At the end of the argument HP concludes that Linnet does feel guilty about what she has done to her friend  and that it was her choice to pursue Simon and she knew how it would affect Jackie and she chose to ignore her feelings of regret and guilt.

Proletariat – Nicolas Tovar

In the Proletariat is a term referring to the class of workers and working-class people, and has a great relation with Marxism.  Marx in the Marxist Theory capitalism exploits the power of the proletariat for the benefit of the bourgeoisie. Marx also argued that eventually the Proletariat would displace the capitalist system and the Proletariat would take power. This would remove the class system and that it would naturally develop into a communist society. The term Proletariat is important in the Persepolis as the importance of Marxism is connected through out the entire story, such as the relation with Marx and God that Marjii sees and that she sees Marxism as a way to combat the oppression that is happening to her family as well as her people.  Mariji is also shown the struggles of the Proletariat and the differences that her family and other less well off famines encounter.

How To build a fire made me feel

Throughout my entire reading of “To Build A Fire” by Jack London, I had the feeling of cold and somberness. I have felt incredibly cold before such as when my apartment lost it’s heat and we were in sub -10 degree weather but reading this I felt a cold that had never befallen on me, a cold that made me think of nothing else but the cold. I felt this as many stories simply tell you what the main character was feeling once or just stating that it’s cold or the temperature but never go into detail about how the character is feeling. In “To Build A Fire” there are constant details such as the man’s blood shivering from the cold and the cold actively taking away the man’s life energy shows just how cold he is. Another detail that gave me the feeling of cold is the comparison between what cold the man has gone through and the cold that the dog has felt throughout their lives. When a dog who has lived in the cold their entire life is feeling cold then  the severity of the cold is much more understandable. Lastly is the desperation that the man was going through to feel warm which to proves worthless as he eventually died from the cold.
