Why does All The Character Traits of Joseph give him more dept.

 

Joseph arrives, in both short story and film it is   abundantly clear of the clash of cultures.  Ultimately this is a story about fitting in outside ones comfort zone. There are no hidden messages in this story but more character traits of all the characters that builds on the message. Each character seems to have a job within the story and film that gives the story more dept. WE also get an insight to where Joseph is emotionally due to his past with his Father being his teacher as well back home.

Joseph himself has a radical change in the story, not only because he is the main character but when the film does flashbacks with Joseph in Africa it shows him as a very enthusiastic boy and very talkative to where he is in Ireland where he  is silent.  The narrative between the short story and short film is profound  mostly due to the hardships Joseph went through in where his father was killed. One of the most noteable differences of this story is that not only Joseph was enthusiastic with school back in Africa but all the children were, than we look at Josephs new school and see that all students  are disrespectful to their fellow students and the teacher as well. Joseph’s father seems in the flashback to have the children’s attention where the teacher in Ireland spends more time on discipline with all the children.  The director made a good choice in the editing of “New Boy”  with the somewhat smoother cut in to Joseph’s past and back to present time.  It feels like the director was taking a transition shot from the point of view of Joseph and his past to his time currently in Ireland and it was used as a key component in editing the film and because it is Josephs point of view rather than the narrator’s there are some point of view shots through out Josephs first day at this new school. We always have to keep in mind that this is all new to Joseph so the audience will get the feeling of a new experience just as Joseph is in the film. And mise-en-scene is done through out the film where there are sometimes full camera shots with the characters because the story includes confrontation sometimes and full shots of both actors is shown.

During the eleven minute film  we have an overall  amount of exchange concepts but in the end  forgiveness is the overall impression I received in the story. There are no apologies given  in any exchange of the story but in the end Joseph, Christian and Seth seem to have a mutual liking for one another when the teacher goes back in the classroom to  discipline Hazel. It is a silent apology  due to Josephs quietness and  being amused at Christians joke he says about the teacher. Josephs laughter sums up his attitude towards the other boys and they accept him. Forgiveness is  shown between the boys without hearing any apologies.

We learn through this story and film that everybody is going to feel like Joseph on their first day of a new school, it is universal on that Josephs experiences are the same for us but the background story of where Joseph came from and the trauma he went through might be different but the overall experience can be attributed to many people. It is a more traditional story because the way the story is told is actually more simple and less complicated it just has different aspects to the reasoning of why traits like Joseph being silent through the entire story  is a necessary part of “New Boy”. Without any dialogue from Joseph and the flashbacks from his time in Africa makes his story stronger.

Introduction: 

 

Marjane Satrapi’s “Persepolis” is an autobiographical comic that follows the life of a young Satrapi as she navigates life during the Islamic revolution and state of war in her home country Iran. 

 

Thesis: 

 

While Satrapi and Paronnaud’s 2007 traditional film translation tells the story with the use of sound and motion, Satrapi’s text tells a beautifully complex, vibrant and more emotional story.

 

Body 1:

 

The omitting of  scenes like the one where Marjane’s other visited her in Vienna. These chapters provide more color and emotion to the story. They make a reader more sympathetic towards Marjane.

 

Body 2:

 

Marjane grants herself redemption when she reclaims her Iranian heritage in front of her peers after trying so long to change herself and fit into certain ideals.

 

 

“New Boy” Translation Essay Outline

Introduction: Summary of “New Boy”
-Thesis: While the short story “New Boy” by Roddy Doyle is an exceptional story that is well-written, I think that the short film by Steph Green is able to draw more emotion from the viewers and creates a timeline that is more appealing.
-Method: In order to prove this (my thesis), I will compare “New Boy” by Roddy Doyle to the film adaptation by Steph Green, then I will review the differences between the short story and film, and finally I will examine how both versions deal with evoking emotion from the audience.
First Paragraph: Discuss text, focusing on similarities and differences between the text and film overall, especially with timeline and the use of flashbacks. Establish that the film is a traditional translation of the short story.
Second Paragraph: Focus on the use of color in the film and how that was derived from the text, what liberties the film took from the text by the use of color, how this affects emotions. Specifically focus on scenes with flashbacks to Joseph’s father.
Third Paragraph: Focus on use of mise en scene, especially the quick flashbacks to current day when Joseph has the milk thrown on him and the ending. This is where I will also incorporate the exchange concept of forgiveness.
Conclusion: The use of color and mise en scene brings the audience a far more emotional story than the short story is able to.

Translation Essay Outline

“Persepolis” was written by Marjane Satrapi an Iranian novelist, the novel tells the real-life experiences of Satrapi growing up through the Iranian revolution. In a period of societal and political pressure, Marjane is sent to Vienna. Where she faces the barriers of being a young Iranian woman in the world. In 2007 the book was adapted into an animated movie, directed by Satrapi herself and French artist/director Winshluss. It does an incredible job of enhancing the story while staying true to its source material.

The similarity between the short novel, “New Boy” by Roddy Doyle, and its short adaptation, “New Boy” by Steph Green, is that they both rely on the same story to show their audience. The difference is that they both rely on different uses of storytelling to convey their messages to the audience. Either way, they both succeed in trying to tell their story from their own perspective. While the literary version of “New Boy” by Roddy Doyle may make its story impactful from its usage of justice throughout the story, I think the film version of “New Boy” by Steph Green is stronger in its storytelling through its use of color schemes, acting, and camera angles.

According to Linda Cahir, there are three types of translations for a film: literal, radical, and traditional. The “New Boy” translation stands more on the traditional side by it telling most of the story straight from the novel but also changes the little details to make the story different and be told from the director’s perspective. Because of this, it is not surprising that the film has to change how the story transitions itself to make it not just a carbon copy of the novel. One of these examples is the beginning scene where Joseph stands in front of the students during his first day in an Irish school. The camera focuses on Joseph for a long time while keeping the background blurry. The use of shallow depth of field in this scene shows the emphasis on Joseph feeling isolated from everyone in the class he is in. This is contrary to the novel since at the beginning of it, there are not a lot of visuals but instead, have descriptions of Joseph and his experience in blending in with the other students in the classroom. Therefore, the film version shows a better introduction to Joseph by showing how difficult it is for him to view a different ambiance.

Thesis: Marjane Satrapi’s “Persepolis’ ” takes us through the author’s early life as she struggles to discover herself against the backdrop of the Iranian revolution and the subsequent turmoil. This novel brings us into Marjane’s developmental years where she is exposed to different political thoughts, ideologies, and philosophies. However these same ideologies she has discovered herself come to blows with what she is being taught by the regime, leaving her wondering where she stands. In the 2007 film adaptation of the novel, we see the same story done within a traditional translation where some scenes are revamped to fit the more stylized version, sometimes even removing whole scenes from the novel.
