The discourse community I belong to is hospitality management. Hospitality is simply the act of welcoming guests to a restaurant, hotel etc and catering to their needs. The major responsibility is to make sure guests have a pleasant experience while they are in the place of business you work in. Hospitality management is considered a discourse community because although there’s a hotel crew, restaurant crew, bakery crew and event planning crew the common goal is to make it the best experience for a customer. Before getting into this major I thought it was all about either cooking or baking. I also thought it would be easy choosing a career path but because there so much it’s difficult.I am interested in management or event planning.I like being in charge I like telling people what to do and I believe I am very reasonable. When your event planning you need to take the customers ideas and make it come to life. So you are not really in charge because you are going based on the wants and needs of a certain customer.
I conducted research within this group to make sure I fully understood it. I spoke to Jacqlien G. And she told me about the different jobs that branches off from this major. After getting my bachelors degree in hospitality management I could possibly become a H.R for a hotel or restaurant. She also advised me to take 1101 classes for hospitality to test it out and see if this is something I am really interested in.While I was taking public speaking I met Jenny who was in the hospitality major. She told me that from what she knew about me I would like the major we became closer and she would tell me what she learned and what path she chose. She wants to become a chef and she explained that before she got into the major she had no idea on what she wanted to be so she tested it out and she loves it. I am in a similar problem .Prof.Goolad who taught me about the history of hospitality. Hospitality originated from foreigners coming to new lands and being taken care of by the natives of the land. They would show the foreigners around, they would feed them that’s where the hotel concept came from.In the process of interviewing I learned that in this major you are able to take a trip to disney and further your hospitality skills. You can work in the hotel to learn more about the business and what skills you need to work on to be as success as you can be.Or you can work as a chef cook meals for people and learn more about the french cuisine which is one of the famous cuisines. Also working there you will see how all the different people in different positions work together .So you will be getting an inside view of the hospitality industry as a whole until you choose an area of focus. What brings hospitality together is diversity. Diversity in the workplace increases productivity and communication with different people.Diversity doesn’t only have to mean working with other races but also working with business people or people who come to the hotel or restaurant with family. You need to learn how to make everyone feel comfortable. You would need to figure out how to make the environment less noisy for the business person and how to make it fun for the kids. I Learned that during the french revolution french chefs who” lost their mind” migrated to New Orleans which mixed the French and African American cuisine. The fact that they mixed together is what caused Louisiana to be known for its amazing restaurants. I always wanted to go to louisiana because i know their known for the food they have there but i never knew about the history of the cuisine. The hospitality community is unique because it relies on voluntary income and free time. Also it requires active thinking and coming up with new ways to please guests. You will never be bored. You will always have something to do because there’s different people coming in everyday.Different people with different personalities. In the hospitality community knowing your brand is important you need to know what you do and dont stand for. Also you need to put customers first. They are the main factor of business. In the hospitality industry they value communication. You need to communicate with customers with co workers etc. To get into the hospitality industry you can either go to college and take the major or you can apply for jobs such as a cook or even a dishwasher to get a start into the industry. Maybe after the job you want to further your career and understanding of the industry so you can go back to school and get a degree. The process is pretty formal. Members communicate with each other through social media, emails, text, etc. I haven’t learned about the specific way they communicate yet if there even is one.
In conclusion I didn’t really learn much from this project. But since this is my first semester in the hospitality major I am constantly learning new things.I learn more about the history of hospitality. It is very interesting to be a part of this discourse group.Being in this community I noticed that most people are self taught. They didn’t go to a high school that taught them how to cook or bake. They learned how to do it from practicing for their family. I also have been hearing different stories on why people choose to join the major.

Good research into a topic you’re still learning about! Could you break down this information into smaller paragraphs? I got a little confused at times.
