WHAT’S DUE: UNIT THREE

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for sending your COMPLETED ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.

IF YOU DID NOT SEND IT, PLEASE SEND IT BY 11:59pm Sat Nov 28 (there will be a late penalty.)

YOU NEED TO SUBMIT THAT ASSIGNMENT TO DO UNIT 3 (and to do this week’s homework).

UNIT 3—Writing in a New Genre

Goals for the week:

  1. Transition from Unit 2 to Unit 3
  2. Tie Unit 2 research to Unit 3 new genre by discussing audience
  3. Write proposal for new genre

Due by 11:59pm Tue Dec 1

Throughout the semester, we’ve seen people talking about (for example) education in a variety of different genres. In each instance, the authorities to reach a different audience and picks the genre that will best speak to that audience. Think about Lynda Barry’s comic or James Baldwin’s speech, or Jamila Lyiscott’s poem. These are all different genres. Why might one write in any of these genres?  Who do these genres reach?

In this unit, you’ll be writing about the topic you researched in Unit 2 for an audience of your choosing—so now think about what genre you think will best reach your audience!

1) READ: UNIT THREE ASSIGNMENT SHEET and ARTIST STATEMENT HANDOUT (under Content in Blackboard)

2) READ: Helpful resource to choose a genre: 

The NYT has an entire list of “Mentor Texts” that help you write articles like a sports article and a personal health column. It’s quite useful.  It can be found here:

I suggest a Magazine Article, Newspaper Article, Advice Column, Brochure, Essay … something written over a visual genre.

 

3) WRITE: POST Discussion Board: Write a proposal of at least 200 words outlining what you plan to do for Unit 3. This proposal should tell us:

  • A 1-2 sentence statement of what you want to teach your audience
  • The audience you are trying to reach
  • The genre you are planning to write in and why you chose it
  • A plan—how do you intend to get started?
  • Anything you might be worried about. Concerns about finishing this project.

4) READ: “Annoying Ways People Use Sources” by Kyle Stedman:

5) WRITE: POST Discussion Board Just as a little spoiler, you should know that the things that annoy Kyle Stedman are not really particular to him. In general, these are things worth avoiding in your writing, though some conventions may vary, as Stedman himself points out, from genre to genre.

Please write a two-part response after reading Stedman’s article:

  1. (In about 150 words) What did you learn from reading this? Anything new? What questions or comments do you have on how to use sources?
  2. (In about 150 words) Write a paragraph for your intended audience for Unit 3 using one of your “quotables” from Unit 2 in that paragraph. Keep Stedman’s guidelines in mind while writing this paragraph. Be kind to your audience! Try not to lose them by the side of the road!

WHAT’S DUE THIS WEEK: POST, REPLIES, AND COMPLETED ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Hi Everyone,

IF YOU DIDN’T POST YOUR SOURCE ENTRY ONE on Discussion Board AND 2 REPLIES, do that by 11pm THUR NOV 12 for partial CREDIT and ADVICE.

SOME STUDENTS POSTED ENTRIES BUT FORGOT TO POST REPLIES. PLEASE DO THAT NOW. Seeing other entries will help you. And your comments can help others.

WHEN REVISING YOUR ENTRIES, FOLLOW ROADMAP (under Content on Blackboard).

Each entry should have four parts. Number them:

  1. Bibliographic entry. (Use citation generator like easybib.com or zbib.org)
  2. Summary. (DEVELOPED PARAGRAPH).
  3. Reflection. (TWO PARAGRAPHS, COMMENTING ON THE SOURCE).
  4. Quotes.

 

DUE FOR THIS WEEK:

1) READ SOURCES. You must READ them to complete Bibliography.

2) POST: Blackboard Discussion Board: Draft of Conclusion for Bibliography. 

DUE BY 11pm Sun Nov 15

Conclusion (300 words):

  • Summarize what you found in your research
  • Tell readers what surprised you, or how your understanding of question deepened or changed. (Spoiler: if the answer is “not at all”, you did not do enough research.)
  • Explain why what you learned is important
  • Explain who you think needs to know about it and why (Another spoiler: be specific!  The answer can not be “everyone.”  That is too big of an audience.  Narrow it down to who needs to hear about it first!) 

3) REPLY: Comment on TWO student conclusions. (5 – 10 sentences each).

DUE BY 11pm Mon Nov 16

  • Discuss format of entry. Did they do the four parts?
  • Discuss the writing, what was strong, what can be improved.

4) WRITE: Compile your bibliography (INTRO, 4 ENTRIES, CONCLUSION).

Put it together into a doc. Proof it. Use tutoring if needed.

5) SUBMIT: Complete Annotated Bibliography.

DUE BY 11pm Sun Nov 22

This shows how to frame a quote: “To adequately frame a quotation, you need to insert it into what we like to call a “quotation sandwich,” with the statement introducing it serving as the top slice of bread and the explanation following it serving as the bottom slice.”
