Research

When skimming through the Long island Pamphlets in the BHS Library, they document past disasters mainly in the Long Island area but also all around New York City. The information in the reading and the illustration of the disaster help us see what the consequences of hurricanes disasters in coastal areas, what resources would be needed for the repairs and if researched extensively  can help us figure out what can be done to avoid such disasters in the future. In the book there is a line that says “Now look at Long Island in 1951, but quickly, before what you see today becomes obsolete tomorrow. The only permanent thing around here is the aspect of it all.

Research

Clearly, the task of designing anything of any kind is made lighter by keen observation. In order to properly “mark out/layout” the plan for anything of permanence, careful consideration of all of the “moving parts” has proven to be paramount. As for the “Pier 41” research assignment, the attempt to glean background information about the larger site suggests that historical civil works, building construction policy as well as early municipal planning and development, are all factors to be considered concerning the “hardening” of the site. Although the involvement in such an effort would be summarily theoretical, it is good have some “hands-on” concerning future improvements and to be reminded of the chief place that research/”brainstorming” holds in the world of engineering. “…measure twice…, cut once..”

On Researching in BHS – Heraldi

I have done a similar research type-activity before but the one that the class did in the library of Brooklyn Historical Society was a little different. In the past I’ve researched by looking for books and used them as reference but I have never done research just focusing on photographs. To make it more interesting the activity that we did was in a library that has a history in itself. What I learned during the research includes the gradual change of New York City (especially Brooklyn, albeit just Red Hook), how the city planners were preparing to modify or rebuilt existing sites and how the canals and docks began to change in terms of necessity.

The way I was researching a certain topic today was different from usual. I wasn’t exposed to this way of researching in my past experience. I would usually research the typical way, with the help of the internet. It felt like the old fashion way and was interesting to get a taste of that even though I was using a computer “again” to look at pictures. It took some actual researching not like the maps or books that were handed straight to us. I would like to look at them when I get a chance. Louis and I looked up key terms such Red hook New York, storms and hurricanes.

  • I noticed that the fences to keep the water from destroying everything during a storm were made of wood.
  • Houses and boats also made of wood.
  • Certain houses would be built “close” to the shore.
  • The bottom or the first floor of a house would be supported by thin wooden columns. Did not look like the weight was spread. Mass of 2 floors supported by thin wooden columns next to the shore.
