Philosophy of Nursing

To write about a philosophy of nursing, I must first decide what philosophy means to me.  Shrock Edwards states it best when she said, “philosophy is an attitude toward life and reality that evolves from each nurses beliefs…”  This description gives me the choice to use my own beliefs.  Philosophy of nursing states our thoughts on what we believe to be true about the nature of the profession of nursing and provide a basis for nursing activities.  My personal philosophy of nursing is the core values and beliefs that a nurse upholds when taking care of another human being.  It is the belief that each individual no matter what disease, race or economic status they have will get treated with the highest regards to compassion, integrity and respect that they deserve.  To facilitate patient care, I use the Jean Watson’s theory of caring that provides a guide for me to deliver holistic nursing in all areas.
