Today was my second day of clinical; my objectives were to observed and shadow a nurse Lyudmila who works for the Visiting Nurse Services of New York (VNSNY). Sunrise Senior Living provides services for independent living, assisting living, Alzheimer’s care and continuing care to senior citizens. It is privately own and affordable. When I entered and went to the second floor there was a huge recreational room to my right and a nursing office on my left. Today, Lyudmila was schedule to revisit six of her patients and a new admission. The VNS provides each nurse with a pen tablet lap-top computers to instantly check or update any new data on their patients. If a patient needs more supplies, the VNS places the ordered immediately from the lap-top.
If a patient was assessed out of their suite the patient had to sign the lap-top. If the patient was assessed in their suite Lyudmila used their phone and called the VNS 800 number to confirm the visit. There are two doctors on-site to assess and re-evaluate their patient’s needs. They determine if their patients still require any outside services such as physical therapy, wound care or other services that will help provide a healthy lifestyle for them. This experience gave me a new insight about different things. Firstly, I was very happy to have the opportunity to experienced home care. I believed the multidisciplinary approach to patient care was excellent. Starting with the physical therapist, private aids, employees and doctors were wonderful to the patients. To hear patients express their gratitude about the wonderful job everybody are doing for them was amazing.

My first expression of the VSN Ida was not pleasant compared to the week before that was wonderful. Ida seemed very surprised when I called to get my assignment from her. She placed me on hold for about 5 minutes before providing me with an address and time. I immediately called my clinical instructor and explained what had happened. The professor kindly gave me directions because Ida told me she wouldn’t know because she drives. I arrived at the location at 10am and waited in the lobby. Ida finally showed up 45 minutes late. She introduced herself to me and directed me to follow her into an art room. Ida spoke briefly about herself and her patients she was schedule to visit that day.
Overall, my perception of Ida faded away immediately when we started communicating. I watched her assess her patients and she seemed very compassionate about her job and her patients. I actually had a great experience that day.
